Roached Back I recently read a thread about this but cannot find it now. I checked my Chewy and I believe his back is roached! Does anyone know anything about this and if it is going to affect his health in anyway? Thanks |
Does he walk constantly with is back curved ? |
For the most part, yes. When he is eating is when it is curved the most. |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6456 I think it was this thread...they were talking about a new puppy with a roached back...let me know if it helps.. |
1 Attachment(s) I can relate to this too! Schatzie is like this. Only once in awhile do I notice it but she definitely gets an arch in her back quite often. Im guessing it's a flaw in the breed - as Schatzie has many. :( But....I just love her to pieces and realize I have just as many. Im not sure to be honest about the "health issues". Im guessing she will have more issues with her LP (Legges Perthes) with arthritis setting in upon an older age, but that's ok, I will just carry her around where ever she needs to go and ease her pain as much as I can. Here's a pic that really shows her "arch".... |
OMG Sheryl - I love that pic of Schatzie. The breeders that I've talked to said that it will not cause any health issues later in life. I've read a bit online as well. |

Why thank you!! (Robin at spoiled yorkies made her outfit, it says "brat" on the back. ) Thanks for confirming the health issues or not relating to the arched back! |
You know I think it is the term "roach" back that just makes people freak out about this - I don't think it affects them as pets -only if you want to show them. But "roached" back just sounds so yucky :p - far worse than what it really is! |
I agree w/ Honey. The word "roach" is disgusting. I prefer Humped Back or Curved Back! I want to get a four-legged outfit for Stewie, but the ones I'd bought were not long enough and I had to sell them. He is afraid of the measuring tape, so its such a chore. |
Schatzie is very cute! Chewy's back is just a little less curved. I'm glad it won't hurt him in any way. Thanks for all the replies. |
How old is the Yorkie and his weight ? |
Chewy is 3 months old and about 1 and a half pounds. |
For now , don't worry too much . It may correct approaching adulthood . My friend Fern have had one who was like him . He is ok now . From time to time they take this position when they are not very sure of their environment . Gioia have a perfect straight back and when she is unsure , her back is round . |
