Road Trip We are headed to NC memorial day weekend and its going to be about a 20 hour trip. My biggest worry is mickey getting sick. I take him around town with me quit a bit and its only sometimes that he will puke. What can I do to make this trip comfortable for him and so my boyfriend does not have a heart attack ;) if mickey does puke in his car :confused: |
Jerry got sick a few times in the car when he was about 6 months or so, but one thing we noticed that helped for some reason was the time of day we left. Usually in the morning thats his rest/nap time so we got him up a little early and made sure to not rush because him and he seems to have gotten used to traveling now. We took a trip down to Hilton Head and he handled the 6 hour trip like a champ. Michael |
Maybe your vet can prescribe something to ease his tummy if he seems to be getting yucky feeling? My parents have to give their Ruffy a pill on long trips as he get's ill. Also maybe a few puppy pads underneith him and around just incase to ease your boyfriends mind about a possible mess in the car. Giving him fresh water and potty breaks with fresh air might help a bit too? I wouldn't go too heavy on any meals, that might upset his tummy too. Have fun on your trip, relax, and drive safe. :p |
How old is your Yorkie? Jo got sick at first but now he's almost 6 months old and he's doing much better. Our vet gave us the dosage for (liquid) Children's Benadryl, he said it takes the edge off. Of course you'll want to keep fresh water on hand and sometimes they ride better on an empty stomach or an hour or two after a light meal. My vet said to give a light meal a while before our trip and feed him again after the trip and keep some baby food on hand in case he won't eat, he said that was more complete nutrition than Nutrical without the ups and downs in their sugar levels. He also thought sometimes they ride better being on your lap or the seat rather than in a crate. I always keep Jo on his blanket on my lap with his Nylabone but sometimes he wants me to hold him and he falls asleep on my shoulder. I know that's not the safest way for him to ride and I'd love to have his own car seat but we have a 2 seater car and there's nowhere to put one. |
He is 4 months old, but I am thinking I might just call the vet and see what they say. Thanks for the advice its all very useful :) |

Tini used to puke in the car every time. I have taken a multifaceted approach and finally she doesn't do it anymore. The first time we went on a long trip she puked 4 times on a 4 hour drive. I felt awful. But, she would also puke on 10 minute trips to puppy school and to the vet too. My vet said she might grow out of it as she got older and recommended the following. First, I got her a little car seat that attaches to the seat and lets her see out the window. Second, I don't let her eat anything for about an hour before we are going anywhere. Finally, we go really slow with getting in the car and getting going. First we spend 5 minutes in the car without the car on. Then we spend about 5 minutes with the engine on. Then I pet her a whole lot and we drive. I started with only 5 minute drives and now am up to over an hour. I would recommend gradually getting her used to being in the car and then build up the time. Then, once she is comforatable she will just sleep after settling in, which for me is the biggest relief. Good luck and ask your vet.....they always know what to do. |

We took Gracie on a 3 hour trip and she did great. She does not get sick at all. Found it very helpful to have a pillow on my lap so she could lay down comfortably. She did great until she found out that she could see out the window. We did not leave her in carrier during our trip. Good luck on your trip. Heather |
