The feeding dilemna Hello everyone. I haven't been on this forum in so long and I have missed it. I am still fighting the battle of feeding Lexi. I'm afraid that I have given her terrible habits. I have been boiling chicken for her for approx. 1 year now and mixing it with Pedigree (that's what she finally ate). I took her to the vet's 1 week ago today and he noticed that her knees were a bit worse. He asked about her diet and when I told him what I feed her he STRONGLY suggested I get her on dog food for health reasons. Everything else was OK with her. So I picked up some SD and some eukanuba pouches. She hasn't eatten more than maybe 1/4 cup of food in this entire week. Everything I've read says a healthy dog will not starve itself to death but I'm still concerned. I'm waiting for a call back from the vet now. I'm sure he's going to tell me to stick with it until she's back on dog foods but I wanted to get some opinions from you all. I'm going to stop on the way home and get 2 more packs of the Eukanuba chicken. Not because of her but because of me. I like the way it looks better than the way the SD looks. I also give her purina hard dog food (small breed). She had trouble with bigger pieces of dried dog foods. |
Here's a link to a thread that grades dog foods for you. There are much better foods available than SD and Eukanuba. Are any of these from the list available in your area? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64979 You can usually get samples of the dry foods, that way you can try them and see what she will eat. I always get the matching canned food because my boys get a small bit for breakfast and dinner mixed with a little dry food, plus I leave dry out all the time. |
It never seases to amaze me how often a Vet. will ask what food do you feed, then give the guilt trip just to sell garbage food like Science Diet for profit. When you feed your baby real food, you need to know what all she should be eating and what vitamins she should have and so on. Put her back on real food, but get a good book on what to feed and has recipes. I am always recommending Dr. Pitcairn's complete guide to NATURAL HEALTH FOR DOGS & CATS. Don't let your baby suffer any longer. Feed her good food. |
I think you're right about the vet.. I did let him put me on a guilt trip and for me, SD is NOT the way to go. Kick-backs or no kick-backs I would think that a vet should have the animals best interest at heart and SD doesn't have the most desireable ingredients. I have tried the Merrick's foods but she doesn't seem to care for them. Last night I made a trip to Petsmart and picked up a pouch of the Nurto Natural Choice Chicken. I read the ingredients carefully. No bi-products, first ingredients were meats. I opened up a packet and put a bit down and she sniffed it and walked away. My husband, who is the worst offender at giving her table scraps, took the plate to the table and fed her the pieces by hand and she ate them all enthusiastically. I know she's just being stubborn and for myself, I would like to get her back on dog food because I do think it would be better for her and easier for me (a full-time working mom who certainly doesn't need yet ANOTHER person too cook for). Thank you for responding and offering your opinion. I agree with you and I think I may just add the Natural Choice to a small portion of boiled chicken and try weening her off the boiled chicken that way. I can't stand seeing her not eatting. |
Have you tried Life's Abundance? You will not find a fresher or healthier food on the market. You can ask Dr Jane Bicks, the food formulator, on our Thursday night Conference Calls. No other company offers you the opportunity to speak directly with the food formulator. Commercial pet foods are cooked in huge batches to fill warehouses & stores all over the country. Subsequently, the industry average from the date of manufacturer until you purchase a bag off the shelf is 18 months. I used to drive a truck over the road and one of the contract my company had was with a pet food distribution company. The warehouse was open to the elements, no air conditioning or heating and there were trailers full of food that would sit for months (because the manufacturing facility would keep sending in food and they didn't have enough room in the warehouse to store it all). Life's Abundance is cooked frequently in small batches and shipped direct to you. It is never more than 6 weeks old when you receive it, not several months old. I found out about Life's Abundance when my Yorkie's health declined and after spending hundreds of dollars on tests only to have my vet say he couldn't find anything to make him act the way he was and suggest I change his food. I thought I was buying a good food. The short story is he has been eating Life's Abundance for almost a year and a half and has gone from barely moving around - very lethargic as if he had no energy to jumping up, spinning in circles, running out the door, playing with my lab mix and just being a normal active dog. I got my buddy back and I am sold on this food. |
I have been wanting to try that food... |
You really should give Life's Abundance a try. You can get samples (there is a small mailing charge) or place an order here. If you or your Yorkie aren't happy with it you will receive a refund. |
I was just looking at the site...looks very promising. Do they carry canned foods. Lexi isn't crazy for dry foods. |

I've had Ralphie on Life's Abundance until the vet switched him to SD Prescription U/D diet food for his calcium oxalate stones 3 weeks ago. I am so upset with the crap in SD and I can't believe that the garbage in that canned food will ever help his stones. 5 years of feeding him so well and now I'm forced to resort to junk. What kind of prescription diet could this be if the ingredients are so darn awful?? I could see dogs getting sicker using it, not better. |
I just put in an order for a sample..my baby used to be soooo picky but lately he is a gobbler so I hope he likes it..I am very excited about the way the food sounds....it seems so healthy!! Can't wait...thank you guys for posting all of this info... |
