I use ear powder in their ears after I clean them. This keeps the ears dry and makes hair plucking very easy. I've been using 'R-7' ear powder which I bought in Petsmart which says it contains something to help grip the hair. It works great. But you should only pull a few strands at a time, not a whole clump. I use my fingers and tug gently and they never act like it hurts them. I find it easier to keep the ears clean without hair in them. :animal36 |
plucking ear hairs I have seen the professional groomers do this and the dogs don't seem to mind. I, however, can't do it..thinking there is a trick here to get it done with out pain. However, with mine, I just clip off the extra hair with little tiny battery charged trimmer. Works for us. sadielyn |
Properly plucking ear hair doesn't seem to hurt them. However, yorkies don't generally have problems with excessive ear hair or ear infections. It's more a poodle/cocker/golden retriever/lab....problem. Dogs with drop ears. If your yorkie doesn't have much ear hair just leave it be. If there is lots of hair and you feel it is a problem and want to pluck it then just pull (don't yank!) a few hairs at a time. Just be sure you are just pulling the hairs growing up out of the ear canal and not just growing on the inside surface of the ears. If their is evidence of an infection (dirty/smelly) then the vet should check it out because pulling the hair in an infected ear could cause more problems. |
thank you. this seems to make sense. I have some of this powder as someone gave me a doxie and I fostered her for awhile. She didn't have an ear infection..but I had to keep the ears dry. |
My brother's yorkie gets his ear hair plucked out to avoid infection, but he has never had an ear infection (he's 4 months) so I don't know if it's necessary or not. The hair is there for protection. My American Hairless Terrier has no body hair at all, and they develop more earwax as a protective measure to protect the ears since they don't have the hair to protect their ears. My yorkie has never had a problem. If the ears aren't erect, the ear canal can get very moist and warm so infections can happen, but you can also just keep them clean, and trim the ear hair around them. I don't see any reason to pull the hair out. It seems cruel and unnecessary. |
Our vet keeps ear hair, anal glands & nails done. I have watched and there is a powder put in first, the hair plucked and then a rinse to clean. I trust him and we have had no problems. |
