Questions About Vaccinations Good Evening everyone. I have a question about Vaccinations. Babybear is due for his vaccinations and I have been told and have read in the past that Yorkie's should not have the Lipto vaccination. This is what he is due for right now. I have told the vet I did not want the lyme disease shot done on him last year and they have him scheduled for it this year so I will have to say no again. The other Shot he is due for is the DHLPP Booster. I know I am going to get a lot of responses to this. I am just worried about him at this point. Babybear is the little guy that broke his neck back in July. He had undiagnosed AAI/AAS (Atlantoaxial Instability) this is a malformation of the vertabra in the neck. Well I know his immune system has been down after surgery he ended up with a papilomia virus under his tongue. I guess what I am asking is should I worry about him getting this shot???? Thank you for all your help. |
I decided after reading some bad reactions to the Lepto not to have Cali get it a couple of months ago. My vet didn't have a problem with it. I would ask your vets opinion and then decide. |
Lepto isn't always given because of the risk of an adverse reaction (if I'm not mistaken, lepto is responsible for more reactions than any other shot) and because it doesn't offer much protection (there are many strains of lepto and the vaccine only covers for a few)..... Is lepto a concern in your area? If the vet has seen cases of it lately that could be why they're recommending it. The DHLPP is a combo vaccine that contains Distemper, Hepatitis, Lepto, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus. If you don't want to give lepto then they shouldn't be using this shot..... Lyme is given in areas where it's a concern. If you have no contact with ticks you probably wouldn't have to worry about it, but I would discuss it with your vet. If it were me, I would ask if the vet would titer instead of automatically vaccinating.... A titer test should tell the vet the antibody levels in your pup's blood. If he has adequate protection he would probably be okay not getting a "booster".... Is he still sick? If his immunity has been down I would try to put off any vaccines until he's back up to par. Vaccinations can be hard on a dog's system and getting them when they're already sick can just create more problems. |
Kelly, Thank you for your response. Babybear's immune system should be getting better. He has his surgery 6 months ago, but he still has a small papillomia virus under his tongue. They say the get then from having a low immune system. He still can not walk so he do not go out side unless he is in his stroller or in a pouch on the front of me. So I feel that the lyme shot is foolish. I have talked to someone about the Titer I am really interested in this. I think I am going to look more into it. I will also ask the vet about lepto. I haven't heard of anything around here, but I do not know for sure. Thank you again. |

Thank you. I am still deciding if it is a good idea or not for Babybear to have this. I have a nother week to decide hoping to get some more responses before his appointment. |
My pups just had their 1st shots this Wed. and my vet and I talked about this. He said that as long as your dogs are inside and are not in contact with cattle/cows (including pasture, creekwater, standing ponds that cows would come in contact with) you are okay and Lepo is not needed. T. |
I don't know that I can be of much help, but when I first got Ferdinand I didn't know any better to not get Lepto. His first round of immunizatons, which contained Lepto, made him extremely lethargic... and he almost acted drunk - falling over and stuff. His second round, however, he was fine, but I gave him some children's benadryl (as instructed by the vet after describing his bad reaction), and he was fine - no bad reaction. In between his 2nd and 3rd round is when I learned that the Lepto immunization can be harmful. So at the appt for the 3rd set, I told them I didn't want him immunized for it, but they said he already had been as it was combined with another shot. I'm sure some of the more experienced members here could provide you some more educated insight, but I just wanted to share my experience with the Lepto immunization. Good luck with your little one, I'm sure everything will work out for the best!! |
