re: feeding I schedule Gigi's twice per day and she's ravenous. Of course, I free-feed myself and look at me:eek: ......hahaha. Back to the type of feeding, the breeder free-fed her. I noticed that I've had to reduce Gigi's collar a week after I got her because of the schedule. If I free-fed her our other dog will gain all the weight. |
I feed on a schedule and it works great for us. But for the longest time Magic & Sailor would not eat when I first put down their food.....it might take them an hour to decide it was time to eat or they would snack for the hour. But once I got Captain and he would eat his meal right away....Magic & Sailor started doing the same thing. I feed at 6am & 6pm....that is what works best for our schedule and to get them to all sleep through the night. I do pick up the water at 8pm, as Captain will drink all night and then be up several times to potty. I think you have to do what works for your pups....we have done free feeding also, but we could not monitor who was eating how much....and then Magic got put on a special diet and if left down the others would eat hers instead of their food. |
I schedule her meal twice a day 7AM and 7PM. I gave her rice roll as treat during the day. It makes potty train easy since she almost potty at the same time everyday. She also knows to potty before she goes to bed. Out of curiosity how many times does your adult yorkie potty everyday ??? Mine is 7 months and she potty 4 times a day (6AM, 8AM or 12 AM, 7PM and 11 PM) |
I free feed, she doesn't eat that much and I have her litterboxed trained so she eats whenever and goes potty in her box. |
I used to free feed and all of my girls became fussy eaters. I started to feed on a schedule and would pick up the food after 15-20 minutes and they wouldnt get it again until their next feeding time. At first they were still fussy but as time went on they started getting better about eating. When I was free feeding I was going through several brands of foods |

I schedule feed mine. He eats at 9am and 6pm and gets a little snack before bedtime. I mix some cooked vege, some boiled chicken breast and chicken soup to moisten his kibbles. He usually finish his food within 5 minutes. He doesn't overeat. He will stop when he has enough and have been doing good on it for the past 4 months I have had him. I prefer schedule feeding because I prefer he has a schedule for pooping. |
feeding I have tried to feed my dogs twice a day, but it just does not work. The male gets too hungry for a snack around lunchtime. So, I feed them about three times a day. They each get a total of 3/4 cup of kibble per day. Sometimes at night they get a baby carrot or a bisket before bedtime. If they've been out for a long walk, I'll give them extra food. Also, if they are out in the yard running around in the snow they seem to get hungier and I give a little more food. |
Update... For the past two days, I've been sprinkling the crumbs from her freeze dried liver treats on her portions of royal canin. She has been wolfing down all three portions for the past two days. So for now I'm going to try sticking with the schedule. She's been eating 2 tb each at 8a, 1p, and 6p for a couple of weeks now, but only the past two days has she actually finished her food each time. I'll probably start trying to give a little more each time to see if we can get that suggested 1/2 cup a day in her. |
Periwinkle, you may check that your dog food is nutritionally adequate. Foods with fillers and no good protein source cause dogs to eat more and be hungry more often. Misty, I wouldn't try to feed her any more than she's eating (including the treats). She won't starve, and as long as she's on a good quality kibble (I've heard mixed things about Royal Canin. Believe it has corn, which is a filler), she's getting all the nutrition she needs. You don't want her to be overweight at all, especially while her joints and such are still growing. You might try swithing foods and see if there's another one she likes better. She'll eat very little of a high quality food, and it'll do well for her. :) My 7 and 11 lb. babies eat 1/2 cup a day, so I don't think your little girl needs that much. |
My senior has been switched to Nutro for Senior Kibble and my 3 month old loves to try to grab her food when she is out. The puppy is on Pro Cal for puppies tiny pieces and both are free fed all day. The puppy hardly seems to eat much at all but she is gaining weight and does get treats also because of housebreaking woes. |
feeding I did switch my dogs food three months ago to Wellness. It has no fillers, meat by products or junk in it. My female dog weighs 7 lbs. My male weighs 12 lbs. The vet said my male dog might have hyperthyroidism, and thats why he's gaining weight and wants to eat all the time. I'm going to the vet next week, and I'll see what she says. |
We free feed.... did also with our poodle.... and have never had any negative experiences with it. I tried the scheduled feedings when Tatum was a baby because of the housebreaking issues but gave that up quick.... she just wouldn't eat it when I put it down and we are not always on the best schedule at home anyway for me to remember to put it down at a certain time. Luckily, we didn't have problems with the housebreaking. That's the only reason I considered it. My sister has three medium - large dogs in the house and she schedule feeds them but they wolf it down in under a minute when she puts it down. I just think small breeds are different in that aspect. |
I free feed with kibble, when they get their wet food it's insane, 4 dogs and each thinks the others have better food and they start eating from every plate like musical chairs, it's a nightmare. They are not overweight, it works for us, this way when I am gone and it's eating time I don't have to rush home. |
