Reverse Sneezing I've notice that both my Gabi & Gina are sneezing a lot, and are doing a lot of "reverse sneezing". Should I be concerned? What should I be looking out for? My Daxie came back from the kennels (3 weeks ago) with kennel cough, but has been on anti-biotics, and is now 100% fine again. Could this be a case of them catching something from him, as this late stage. Do you think I should be taking them to the ver? As it is, my vet says I'm a paranoid Yorkie mom, so I'm a little nervous of just running off to him. By the way, this does not seem to be affecting their personalities. They are by no means off colour. |
My 3 month old has done this since we got her 17 Dec 06. Just finished antibiotics Saturday. If its not one thing its another. Her 3rd round of vaccines are this Wed. And then there is the housebreaking training (not going as well) Sigh. |
Hi, If my Vet even hinted that I was a over reactive mom, I would be finding a new Vet. That is what he is there for and I am sure he is paid well. I think I would find a new Vet because he is not going to take you seriosly on anything now due to the fact he thinks you over react. Good Luck, Pam and all the fur babies. |
Unfortunately, what I thought was reverse sneezing since Ralphie was 3 mos old turned out to be a collapsed trachea, which he as lived with and he's now 5. He seems to do the choking bit only when he gets excited or I have to put his harness on to take him out. Very scary though. Sounds like he can't catch his breath. |
I see you live in South Africa. Do you run your air conditioning alot. I live in Florida & we do. I found out by getting a small humidfyer & running it at night the cool mist stopped their sneezing or coughing or that sound they do that sounds awful. Air conditioning takes the humidity out of the air, causing it to be dryer air. It worked for us.. |

Hi No, I don't run an airconditioner at all, so that could not have been the problem. I am happy to report though that they are both MUCH MUCH better, and seem to have almost stopped. There is now just a little "normal" sneezing. Perhaps it was just an allergy / hayfever thing??? as January is a very high month for pollen count is SA. |

Yes, my poor little baby has lived with it for 5 years and there is really nothing else to do but pray he's okay when he gets older. We tried meds to no avail and surgery was a suggestion but the vet said there's more risk to the surgery and the recovery period than just leaving him alone and living with it, which I've opted to do. He's very active with no problems, except when he gets excited or sees his leash! Thanks for asking! I'm happy your furballs are much better too! :) |

I never had problems with allergies until I moved to SA. The vet thinks my 12 week old may have allergies. Sure is a possibility with all the coughing lately and weather. This time of year there is real bad cedar. It is still scary seeing a tiny little thing coughing. |
Both my Yorkies do that, my vet said it is an allergy and not to worry. He said if it gets excessive he can RX an antihistima but they ar so little it will prbabably make them tired. I don't see it to be a health issue they only do it when they are excited. |
Wow, I had no idea how many Yorkies (and small dogs) do this. We had small dogs while growing up and i know I must have heard this then also. Im missing sleep over this. Tonight we tied a lemon around her neck (being careful and not at night) and let her walk around with it on. This is a grandma remedy passed down from generations and what the heck, just tryng it out. She really coughed when I got home but all day it was very light. My wife washed all her clothing in the pet taxi and cleaned the laundry. We have very bad allergens here also (sigh). I will keep you informed, thanks again!! |
My little girl Emma does this all the time. The vet told me to rub the sides of her throat to help it subside :) |
I have read and my vet told me that kenel cough is contagius for up to 14 weeks after the infrected dog is cured!! I would take them to the vet, just in case...you can never be too safe!:p There is a thread I started in the breeders section entitled kennel cough, I got some helpful responses, it might help. |
Well, I thought my 13 week old was getting better but lately she has been having coughing "episodes." It happens mostly in the morning and at night but can happen anytime. I fear taking her back to the VET will only lead to more antibiotics. No other symptoms besides coughing, she likes to play and nonstop puppy behaviour. My wife did say she did sneeze some boogers once two days ago but other then that, just the coughing episodes. Nonspecific causes is frustrating. I really want her better....housebreak training is enough stress already. |

So I've learned to get second & 3rd opinion. Even calling to check prices on testing etc can be educational. |
My Sassy does that reverse sneezing thing....only my vet said it is inherent in Yorkies and it isn't reverse sneezing, but a weakened trachea. (I had a Cocker Spaniel that did the reverse sneezing thing). She does it when she gets over excited for sure but it also happens other times as well. Today I noticed when she had a pretty rough patch of it, she also pees a little tiny bit. The reason I noticed was because I had picked her up to try to calm her some. I had left for about an hour and she was as excited to see me as if I had been gone a week. The excitement brought it on. All I know to do is try to sooth her and rub her throat gently until it subsides.:( |

Pricing "So I've learned to get second & 3rd opinion. Even calling to check prices on testing etc can be educational." ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Absolutely! Today I called all around and checked for office prices only. Sometimes I feel the receptionist at some places are rude. We must have 100 Vets here. So far, they all average in the $30 something range for a visit. The one I have been going to is close by and charges 39 dollars so with gas and all I think it is fair. FOr procedures I guess once they get you in, anything goes. Thats why Im keeping an eye on the coughing my puppy is doing. Without a procedure, it appears just a guessing game. Sure they can listen to her lungs and all but I can do that also. |
My Ginger stopped coughing!!!!! For about a week now, I think I only heard a few light coughs at most! It could have been anything but I still suspect it was the kennel cough vaccine. God is good. ;) |
I found an article about it http://www.peteducation.com/article....articleid=1112 and for kennel cough 2 of them http://www.peteducation.com/article....articleid=1159 http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=452 here you go hope they feel better |
Wow, thanks for sharing that article! THis portion really may apply to what happened to our puppy after she got the vaccine: "More commonly, for best protection, an intranasal vaccine containing both parainfluenza and Bordetella is used. Intranasal vaccines create localized immunity that greatly reduces the incidence of clinical signs and illness. There are several precautions and warnings that need to be observed pertaining to this vaccine. Some dogs will develop mild signs similar to tracheobronchitis when given this vaccine. Very often, the symptoms will last for several days and the dog will recover without treatment. Dogs that are vaccinated can also shed the virus and cause other dogs to become mildly infected and show mild signs. This shedding usually lasts less than 72 hours. In addition, it takes up to 4 days after vaccination for dogs to develop protection. When you combine these facts, you will see why I strongly recommend that a dog not be given intranasal vaccine within 72 hours of coming into contact with other susceptible dogs. Do not give the vaccine the day before a dog show, boarding, etc. Try to give at least four days before contact with other dogs, and preferably 7 days. This way you will protect your dog from becoming infected by other dogs, and protect those dogs from becoming infected by yours. This vaccine is not without its problems. It is a very effective vaccine, but it must be used carefully and is generally only recommended for dogs that are at high risk. If your dog is not shown, boarded" |
Kasey has been coughing and sneezing too I called the vet today, and she said that this time of year in south Florida is high allergy season. She said to try giving Kasey a half a benadryl and see how she does.... I've been reluctant to do so, hoping she'll get better on her own today -- but will probably give in and try it tomorrow. I'm so concerned when I see her coughing and sneezing -- it seems to happen even more during the sleeping hours -- but I'm trying not to worry to much because her appetite is good and she is still active and playing. If she's not improved by Monday, we'll head to the vet. It's been reassuring to read the posts on the YorkieTalk site, as always! One question: How do you tell the difference between kennel cough and other symptoms? Is the cough unique in any way? Thanks.... Kim |
