Help my little guy is sick I have a beautiful little boy yorkie, 3 1/2 months old, last night he had a seizure of some kind, we took him to emergency clinic, all his blood work came out normal, he was so out of sorts, looked like he was drunk, falling down, looking at us but not really comprehending, who we were. Today we took him to the vet, they said to just watch him, and bring him back if he does it again. He has been very subdued and tired, today, he is perking up this evening...anyone else go through this type of thing? Thanks for any help you can give me... |

Most likely it is hypoglycemia, Maggie. Go to this website for more information and what to do about it.....then take your baby back to the vet and discuss this with him. http://yorkieviews.com/healthfacts.htm#HYPOGLYCEMIA I know how awfully worried you must be. I hope he is better soon and that it doesn't happen again. We're glad you came to YorkieTalk....please keep coming back and DO let us know how your furbaby is doing. |

Make sure your baby is eating regularly. If not, you must force feed him. Also, you can buy somethign called "NutriCal" at the pet store. It's supposed to be a booster when they're low in nutrition. |

Higgin's Mom .... hypoglycemia was my first thought as I was reading that post! Maggie_001 ... the drop in blood sugar has the very symptoms you described. Yorkies are such high energy dogs that they require more sugar. My Toto gets 2-3cc of vet formula Nutri-Cal every day because she is a picky eater and some days doesn't want to eat. It is a high calorie paste and is loaded with vitamins. She has only had one episode like the one you described ... our vet told us from day one to keep a little bottle of white karo syrup in her bag at all times and if she had an episode like this to immediately give her at least 2cc! We did and she was fine in no time! Keep us updated on your baby .... and Welcome to YorkieTalk!! ;) |

thanks everyone Thanks so much everyone for answering my first post, I was so worried about Jake, I will certainly get some Karo syrup in the house today!!!!! I went into the other links, you suggested, to get some answers, they really helped. My little Jake is back to his normal self today....Thanks again, I am so happy I found this site....Love Maggie & Jake |

Really hope he is ok - I also, thought of the same diagnosis but I think maybe your vet should have also?! The main thing is that he's better anyway and if that's what it was at least it's nothing serious and can be put right. I have a yorkie of very similar age (13 wks) and can really imagine how worried you were! Let us know how he gets on!! |

So glad to hear the little Jake is feeling better! Let's hope that is the only episode he has and if you see him kinda slumping....get that sugar into him. Post a picture of Jake when you can! We love baby pictures! :D |

I am glad he is okay! like they said you should always keep some of the nutrcal stuff on you when they get like that. |

Was he shaking at all? Good to hear he's doing okay, monitor little Jake closely this week to make sure he's okay. I'm glad you were able to take him to the vet at the earliest sign of trouble, that's always a good thing. But yes, please let your vet know about hypoglycemia! |

I'm glad your baby is feeling better. I just would like to suggest that anytime a pup has a poor appetite, seizure, and or hypoglycemia attack they should have a bile acid blood test done to check for liver shunt as these are the most common symptoms of that disorder. Not that every pup having these things will have a shunt, but the sooner its caught the better chances for repairing it. Better to err on the safe side. |
