Nails... How often do all of you trim your dogs nails? Piper was at the groomers about a month ago, and his nails feel long again. His hair doesn't grow that fast, so am I imagining his nails are really growing that fast? He lives in the kitchen, which is all tile (with lots of rugs now), and it seems like he is terrified of the tile every other day. He will get in a hurry, spin his wheels, and fall right down on his side like an iceskater if he can't get to a rug. Nails and paw hair, or just a crazy dog??!! |
It could just be that he has developed an aversion to the slipper floor - my Oscar has gone through phases of this, and definitely prefers carpet over wood or tile. He'll 'spin his wheels' too if he thinks it will get him off the slippy floor faster, which it never does! He probably does need the pads of his feet trimmed up a little bit so he can get a little more traction. Also, after a month, I'm guessing his nails are definitely due for a trim. If you can hear them clicking on the floor, then they are in need of a trim (as told to me by my vet). I cut Oscar and Ruthie's nails every other week - for two reasons 1. to get Oscar used to the nail trimming (he was deathly afriad, but has gotten quite good), and 2. because I'm a big scardy cat and only cut off about 1/8" for fear of hurting his little footies (and then Oscar never letting me near him with nail clippers again!). So trim up those nails and pads! |
Nails can grow really fast, especially if your dogs always on surfaces like grass, etc, that isn't abrasive. Kirby doesn't enjoy our daily walks anymore, so his nails grow much more quickly than the used to. Have to trim them every 2-3 weeks. Since Ginger's walked on the sidewalks everyday, I think that keeps her nails from growing out as quickly. JMO Good luck! |
