Dewclaws.. Ok I have noticed that Wyatt still has his two front dewclaws...he is 6 months of age...and its seems to grow very fast and he gets caught on things sometimes..not always..but it does happen...so my question is...is he too old to still have them removed?? Will it hurt him much?? And will it cost more to have it done now..then when he was a baby??? If it can be done..he will have to wear bandages right?? To keep him from licking it..correct??? Someone please help me out here..and if they know any good vets..close to me..i live in Rialto, Ca...please let me know... A mommy in need of answers! |
If he hasn't been neutered yet you can get it done at the same time. He will be a little sore but should recover quickly. Dew claws are such a pain to deal with but it is not too big of a deal to have them removed even at a later age. Yes it will be bandaged and you should still discourage any licking or chewing where the incision is. Sorry I can't help you out with good vet's in your area. |
I have the same problem with my little chihuahua. I haven't had them removed (and she's about 2 years old) but I have to constantly keep them cut short or they grow right around to her pad. She doesn't ever get them caught on things, but we have mostly wood floors in our house, so carpet isn't an issue. Still, they are a huge pain to deal with. Luckily Lola's breeder had hers removed as a baby. |
lexi still has her dew claws too and i deal with it.. just keep them short. i would never dewclaw her now, its like taking your own fingernail off, yes it has to hurt. why put them through that pain.... |
i was going to have bunjee's front dewclaws removed when he was being neutered but my vet talked me out of it. she said it's like removing my pinky finger to him. in addition, she quoted me an extra 250 to get them removed. i opted to keep them and just trim frequently. |
the lady who grooms spencer told me I should get them removed but I don't want to put him through that pain. I just trim them whenever they need to be trimmed and it doesn't bother me to trim them i think it's better than getting them removed. But i don't think I would ever get them removed |
DewClaws.... Widget had her dewclaws removed when very small, under 8 weeks ... but one started growing back, so when she was spayed the dew claw was removed, it cost me $55 to have it removed, now it was only a partial, and $110 for the spay.....guess that was reasonable.... |
Yea i told myself that..i cant send him throught that kind of pain...so i said im not going to remove them...but just keep them trimmed!!! Thanks guys you helped me a lot! |
Poli had one that grew back, when he was neuterd i had it removed, he had a bandage on for 4 days for he had stiches, he seemed a wee bit sore for a couple of days but recoverd quickly. If i remember right Vet charged me $45.00. |
