Yorkies with diabetes My 10 year old Yorkie has just been diagnosed with diabetes and is on insulin. Any suggestions for a good diabetic diet? |
I'm sorry to hear your Yorkie has Diabetes. :( I don't have suggestions for dogs who have Diabetes just wanted to wish you and your dog well with learning how to live and deal with the disease. Rudys Mom (Dawn):animal-pa |

I have a Bichon who is 12 and was diagnosed one year ago. He has been on Nutro Ultra Senior since he was regulated and he has been doing very well. Have you talked to your vet about foods your Yorkie should eat? PS Here is a link to a great site for owners with pets with diabetes. You can find some good info there as well. http://p090.ezboard.com/fpetswithdiabetescaninediabetes |

One of my two Yorkies was diagnostic with Diabetes, i found out because i saw him increasing drinking and urinate. The Vet told me that water was the only thing keep him alive. From yesterday he is in Insuline and since he lost weight, the Vet suggest me to increase the food portion by 25% to let him regain the weight. Friday we will go for test all day. |
I'll be interested to hear what the vet and others say in regards to diet. I have a 12 yo diabetic cockapoo, and the vet was always more concerned with getting his diabetes regulated with the food the dog was already eating vs switching up his diet. (He has always been on high quality foods). As he has aged, our diabetic dog has become very picky with eating - and at this point (5 years into being diabetic), the vet says to just feed him whatever he will eat. Many times he won't eat his dry food or even wet food added to it -- we end up giving him chicken or hamburger to get something in him. To be honest, it's a struggle we face every day with him. He also suffers from hypothyroidism and is showing signs of cognitive dysfunction. He is slowly losing weight - a healthy weight for him was 18 lbs, at last check he was down to 13 lbs. Good luck. |
I'll be intrigued to hear what the vet and others say as to eating regimen. |
