Frontline in Winter? I live in New York and we are having a very mild winter so far. It was almost 60 degrees today. Normally I stop applying Frontline to my furbaby in the winter months since I figured the fleas are dead in the winter. However, this year with this mild weather I don't know if I should resume Frontline. What do you all suggest? I would rather not use it unless absolutely necessary. |
I dont use flea preventative here. Its beenwarmer here too but there has been a hard frost so the fleas are dead |
I pretty much use flea medicine on my dogs year round. I can't afford for them to bring fleas into the house so I like to be safe rather than sorry. Fleas are so hard to get rid of once you have them in your house. I use it year round because my dogs are around other animals and other animals could carry it so that is why I use it year round. I do use less of the flea medicine when is starts snowing frequently but is has been warm her lately. It is a warm winter for us so far and that is usually not the case. |
I use Frontline year round. I can't stand fleas. |
I don't apply it in the winter. The fleas are dead and I've never had a problem doing that. |
Hi, Great question...I am in upstate NY and I generally stop Advantix in December and start up again in March. If I had just one dog, I would probably keep using it but I have eight so I cut out that expense for the winter months usually. It is so balmy here right now and sun is shining and its around 60 degrees...I'm on my way to take the dogs to the back yard for playtime..unbelieveable for January! I may call my vet and check out what he thinks. |
we also have been having warm weather. i dont normally give flea medicine this time of the year but today i saw a flea....they got the medicine |
I check my furbaby every day for fleas and good thing I haven't found any. The temps are supposed to go down next week so I will not apply any Frontline just yet. I'd rather give him a break from it if possible because I really don't like the idea of using those chemicals year round on him. |
Mojo has never had fleas, but I know ticks are still out - it just hasn't been cold enough to kill them off yet. My vet recommended using flea/tick preventive year round.---BUT we live out in the country (surrounded by natural forest on three sides w/ lots of wildlife), so I think it is best for all of our dogs. |
I been using it on all the dogs & cats still, I thought they had died off when we had a couple of weeks in the 20's & 30's but since its in the 60 I don't trust those little things.... |

Is frost a rule to go by? We used Frontline on Rocky in the summer, but I haven't gotten him any since november. It snowed once, and even though we have some real warm days, were still getting frost. |
My vet uses that rule of the first frost...and I have always gone along with that but global warming may change that! |
What is too cold for a flea? I always thought winter was safe because cold killed them off. It's been high 40's here but cold and windy. They are predicting snow tonight, but I found 2 fleas on Alphy last weekend. What's the deal? |
I thought about maybe using it every other month? |
