Does your baby do this? Well, My baby will play and run around the house for a long time...Just run...I actually think it's funny. But it seems he cough or hacks,or sneeze when he calms down from running around the house...Should I be worried about that or thats normal? |
If thats confusing....He either sneeze, coughs, make a hacking noise... |
Our Yorkie puppy does that too. I thought it is from her bordatella shot, since she really started sneezing a lot after that, and it worried me because I've read bad things about the bordatella vaccine. Did your Yorkie have a bordatella vaccine? She does seem to do it more after running around. I'd like to know if that is normal too. |
My baby does the same thing sometimes...just all of a sudden run from one side of the house to the other all around the chairs and under the tables it is so funny and she too hacks and coughs sometimes when she gets overly excited! When I first got her I thought she might have kennel cough or something because she was coughing but she has grown out of it and now rarely coughs (when she gets extremely excited like when someone comes home or she gets to meet another dog) :) and I have taken her to yorkie play dates in the area and I hear other yorkies hacking and coughing too. I guess it is just something they do when they get excited...some people have told me they grow out of it. Hope this helps! |
Coughing My yorkie is now 10 weeks old. WHen I got her, I didnt hear any coughing but now for about 1.5 weeks (after 2nd shots also) I hear a dry hacking hoarse cough. I took her to the vet and she gave her antibiotics and cough pills. She listened to her lungs and heart and trach for along time and said they all sounded fine. Its been two days and she still does it. Diet is good also. At night and exercising she coughs also but not just exercise dependent. Im worried also. No other symptoms, plays around, does tricks also no other symptoms whatsoever. I am praying she will grow out of it. She sleeps in the laundry where we use soap powder so possibly an allergy, who knows. Candini |

For those that don't read the article, I wanted to add this... "If your dog experiences this behavior fairly frequently and the episodes are severe, a trip to the vet is in order to determine other possible causes, which can include viral infections, polyps, excessive soft palate tissue, and nasal mites. However, many cases of reverse sneezing appear to have no identifiable cause." |
Coughing Thanks for this thread. Ive only had my dog since 17 Dec. The first week or so was fine. We do live in the middle of mountain cedar and tons of other allergens also so this could be a myriad of causes. What alarmed me initially was the CT stuff I read about with little Yorkies. Ive owned two yorkies and still have one so not totally new to this. The snorting Ive heard before and thought nothing of it. Since Ginger is a new puppy, we haven't had time to experience what is a normal behavior yet. Since it happens while she is sleeping/resting in her crate and other times, I just hope the antibiotics will kick in and make her better. :animal-pa |
Do you have cats? My yorkie and poodle do that at times when they are playing around with the cat. Since they are 'play biting' each other a cat hair may get stuck on their throat and they cought to clear it out. |

I guess all YOKRIES have their moments and start runnning around. As for the coughing-my Tippy starts coughing (weird noises) when I come home or when she is playing with her toys. I guess her nose gets stuffy...  |
I always say Muffin has a little bit of jet fuel left in her tank when she runs around like that! She can be calm, peaceful, happy as can be & then...BAM! She's off to the imaginary races. Suddenly she's the Roadrunner from the cartoons. It's like there's a bit of energy she really needs to get burned off before she lays down. She also coughs/hacks frequently after she does it, but our vet checked everything out years ago when we first got her & he concluded she's just gets overly excited. I talk to her calmly & slowly & she usually stops after a short while. C.J. |
Siu Pao does it too after he has been running around very fast and is over excited. I talked to the vet about this and he said that it is normal for the little guys. I guess when I compare myself to him, I am like that too...I cough too when I run..I just don't enjoy running. |
York Im so glad I found this forum! I dont have an indoor cat but another Yorkie whom my little puppy attacks now and then. I also caught her grooming herself also or just bite scratching a little. Today we only heard the coughing only a few times! Still on antibiotics another week and giving her cough pills also. She has done this while resting which really concerned me (hence the vet visit). Also when we bought her we gave her two baths and I started attempting to housebreak her outdoors after her 2nd shots (may have caught a chill) I read about a Yorkie getting a sort of hairball of sorts so I gave her a little hairball medicine today after I got home. This was after I heard her in the laundry hacking about 6 AM a lot! I gave her a cough pill and the hairball meds and I didnt hear anythng for a long time today. |
Candini, did your puppy get the Bordetella shot with her second shots? |
sHOTS I will check out her shot records, I am not sure. Thanks! |
I just realized this is the vaccine for kennel cough, yes I am almost positive the vaccine is standard here for the pups but I want to check for sure. |
I only heard Ginger a coughing a few times today. Antibiotics are finished on Saturday. I am not as worried anymore. |

PS: Thanks ITsPuppyLuv, its always something, with me anyways. |
I'm glad Ginger (& you!) are doing better. I know what you mean about worrying...if Muffin even looks at me in a different way I go into what my husband refers to as "Heightened Alert Level Red". Never mind the fact that he worries about her as much as I do! C.J. & Muffin |
I checked Ginger's shot records and they have it marked, she got the vaccine on 22 Dec and now she is scheduled for another set of shots 17 Jan. Im not sure how many of these kennel cough vaccines does she need? She finishes her antibiotics Saturday. Tonight I heard her cough a few times before I had to go to work. |
Her coughing episodes have resumed. Maybe another trip to the Vet with another nonspecific diagnosis. Has anyone heard of the canine flu: http://www.apcnw.com/PetCareInfo.htm Doubtful but just curious. No other symptoms besides the coughing. |
my teddy does this sometimes it sounds as if he is sniffing and cant get his breath well i panicked and took him to the vets i was told yorkies have a flap down there throats which causes this when it happens i have to lift his head up towards the sky very slowly then head down to his chest slowly and blow me it works everytime i was told that the flap down the throat could be operated on and it would be for cosmetic reasons only to me this seems so silly as you cannot see the flap and no way is he being put through an operation |
Wow, this is so interesting. My baby girl runs around like crazy and does that sort of half-hack, half snorting thing. I'd say it's more like snorting when she is really in one of her crazy moods. Usually in the evening, she goes berserk for a while before bed. Then she snorts and gets really wild especially with the cat. I didn't know that other Yorkies do that. It's good to know tho. The first time she did it, we thought she'd lost her marbles. Candini, I hope your puppy is okay. That darned kennel cough vaccination (the one they put in their nose) can actually cause some of the little ones to get a mild to severe case of kennel cough. It is required tho for them to go anywhere where there are other dogs, such as the grooming salon or doggie daycare. My Pookie sneezed for a couple of days following the kennel cough vaccine, but she's fine now. I didn't know the thing about the flap in their throat. That's good information. |
