Frontline for a little one Our vet gave us a month's supply of Heartgard and Frontline at Riley's first checkup. I always administer meds to our pets on the 1st. Well, here the 1st is... and I'm looking at this Frontline thinking "All of this for tiny little Riley?" It's the same amount Penny receives, and she's a 3 year-old weighing 6 pounds more. Anyone know what I should do? Drat the vet offices for taking a day off. :D |
I know a lot of people use frontline on their yorkies without any issues but my vet recommended advantage instead. He said that in his experience (and he's been in practice at least 40 years) some small breeds/dogs don't tolerate frontline well--even when you use the small dog dose. The only problem is that advantage doesn't protect against ticks--just fleas. I bought the advantage last summer but I never used it--I'm a bit uncomfortable putting chemicals on my babies. Heartguard is a heartworm preventative. Dogs can get heartworms from mosquitos and it can be fatal so they should be given SOMETHING to prevent heartworms. My vet gave me interceptor rather than heartguard-- I believe it also prevents other types of works--round worms, whip worms--but not tapeworms but heartguard is probably fine, too. I would think that the vet SHOULD have given you the correct doses...what does the package say? Aren't the dosages based on the dog's weight? |
Yes, it says up to 10 lbs but she's about 1/10th of 10 lbs! Hee hee. I have Penny on Sentinel and K-9 Advantix which is what I will move Riley to after we use this first month supply. |

My vet said we had to wait until Jewlina was 2 pounds before giving her any kind of heart or flea/tick prevention :confused: |

We use the Program pill for both our kitty and our puppy. I tried putting that Frontline chemical stuff on our kitty and she about had a fit. She twitched and rolled around and tried to lick herself constantly for about 10 mins, until I decided it I couldn't handle it and I washed her off. Program has no effects at all that I have noticed. It just prevents flea eggs from hatching. You can also use Capstar in conjunction with Program. Capstar instantaneously kills fleas the moment it is digested by the dog. It's safe to give to little puppies and cats, even up to several times a day. So it takes care of the fleas that are on your pet and Program prevents anymore from hatching out. |
I had the same question about it as you. I have a 70 lb shepard and a 5 lb Yorkie, The difference in the amount that you give really isn't that much. I spoke to my vet and she explained that you are giving the chemical to for after the fact. It's takes a certain amount to kill the "bugs" regardless of the size of the dog. I was worried that I would poison my baby. Mine is for the animals up to 10 lbs and of course for my shepard, over 50 lbs. Started giving it it Cosmo when he was just a couple of pounds and he is doing fine. I was so nervous about the whole thing but....... I can certainly understand where you are coming from. I always have a ton of questions for my vet. Having a Yorkie is much like having that premie baby. (I had premie twins) You are always worrying. |
I half-dosed my little one until she reached about 3 pounds. It worked and did not make her ill. |
My baby is sick today. Last night I gave my new puppy his first heartguard that the vet gave my mother when she picked him up for me from Florida. Now his stool is loose and my husband said that he threw up today and is hiding in his crate. I am taking him to the vet in a few hours and I will let you know what he says about the dosage. It could be the stress of a new home or the food change (I am transitioning it slowly) but I want to make sure since I am a worried new mom. |
I had the same concerns as you do about it being too much. My vet advised me to use half so I always split one between my 2 six pounders and it works just fine. |
Results to Vet visit I took my little Ernie to the vet and he said that he has not seen the pill cause any problems, even in puppies this small. He did some tests and my puppy has some mild infection and is on antibiotics. He seems to be feeling better and not throwing up so I am not concerned any longer. Thanks for your email and I would have giving him 1/2 if I has read it before I gave him the pill. |
