How much do you feed your yorkie? Mine weigh too much! I am trying to get my doggies to lose weight, and am having a hard time. I never feed them table scraps or other treats, but they still weigh too much. Lucy should weigh about 5 -6 pounds, and she weighs 7. Daisy is bigger/taller, and should weigh about 11 pounds, but she weighs 12-1/2. |
I have to watch Ginger's weight really closely too. Two things that help. Remember to include the treats that you give when determining how much to feed, and provide lots of opportunity for exercise. We walk, play, run around the yard, set up playdates, etc. Even with that, my girls up 1/2 lb right now. I'm blaming it on winter, but I think she's sneaking some of Kirby's food. |
I send Loki to doggie daycare once a week so he can run run run!!! He gets far more out of that than a walk. He gets 1/2 cup a day split into two meals, plus probably more treats than the average dog since we do training at least every other day. Maybe he gets a handful of treats each day. He is a 11 pounds. I just checked the bag and the "feeding recommendations" for a 10 lb adult is 3/4 cup per day. A little high, but he does get treats. He gets premium food (Canidae Lamb & Rice) The lesser quality foods actually suggest that you feed more for two reasons - They are lower quality nutrients so a dog actually has to eat more of it, AND to sell more food! You should be able to notice a "tuck" up under the dog, no belly hanging down, and a visible waist. You should also feel a thin layer of fat over the ribs, but you should still be able to feel each rib. Does that make sense? |
