excessive licking... do any of you have yorkie's who excessively lick strange things....every morning my puppy licks my sheets and pillow cases to the point that they are soaked and he even licks strange things like the woodwork in my house...is this normal? |
Daisy licks her paws and our hands and faces to an extreme. I have no idea why  |
My vet says it can be obsessive compulsive behavoir in some. |
I saw a shirt that read "Can't Hold Lick-er" perfect shirt for your lil pup ;) |
I think it might have something to do with the texture & how it feels on their tongues. Our Muffin will lick pillowcases & towels for no apparent reason. Her favorite thing, however, is my husband's chin & neck when he hasn't shaved. That's where I got the idea that it might be the feel of what she's licking as opposed to the actual object. Then again, I could just be jealous of her spending all her time & attention on someone else! ;) C.J. |
yes, zoe licks my bed, my hands, feet EVERYTHING. |
Shayna is also a compulsive licker! She licks blankets, towels and stuff like that, but her favorite is faces, hands and toes! every time i get out of the shower she comes running over to lick my feet! its so weird but cute! My boyfriend also has a lot of stuble on his face and she enjoys licking that...her tongue always ends up getting in our noses or mouths!:aimeeyork |
They are so funny arnt they! My yorkie licks my legs when I get out the shower and will lick his soft toys. My dog trainer said a dog who licks his owner a lot is asserting dominance in the pack as the alpha male lets himself be groomed when he wanted but grooms the rest of the pack when he chooses too and they have to put up with it. My male yorkie is very dominant so I had to watch this. I do let him lick me but at my conveinince not his if I stop him and he ignores me and pushes to continue I put him on the floor so he knows im boss. The same with me brushing him, he tried to squirm and move when I got him but I had to teach him I was alpha male and hold him till I was done. Now he sits no problem. I was amazed how tackling the dominant in the pack behaviour sorted most his issues like, excessive barking, chasing people, not letting himself be groomed, ignoring me when I was trying to train him. He is much happier not being the alpha male shivers less and is more sociable now he knows his place. My trainer even had me bare my teeth at him when playing tug with a sock his favorite game so he dropped it and I "won" the game now and them again to assert my dominance. Makes my husband laugh!!! Licker licker licker Quote:
Monday does the same thing ... I first thought it was the salt on my skin ... but she also runs in and licks my legs after a shower, licks the towels, sheets, pillowcases, etc ... I guess it is a "yorkie" thing!!! However, when I say "Stop, please!" She stops (for a while ....) Glad to hear I am not alone! |
Yes I know what you mean! Princess ALWAYS licks my hand when I am holding her even after I've washed my hands... she just licks it nonstop until I get annoyed  |
One dare not fall asleep within reach of Ms Abigail, or s/he will wake to a tongue in the nostril. Yeah...grrrreat way to wake up, that  . Abbie doesn't lick me as much as my male, Mozart. And, he will give me little flicks with his tongue when he walks past. :animal36 When we first brought Abbie home, he stopped flick-kisses completely for two or three weeks. Broke my heart. |
licking we've been curious about the licking thing too,, and that's how I discovered this web site / joined. Our 5 yr. old female (Mandy) likes to lick. . . furniture, us, bedspread, etc. will keep checking to see what info is posted here. Thanks, all.:p |
Oh the licking....it's funny and not so funny sometimes. Snickers used to lick ALOT, but now it is alot less. Yes, something about the shower...he likes to lick my leg as if he is going to taste my shampoo or body wash:). It smells good, so he licks it. The bedding could be b/c your pup loves you. They love your smell so lick it to show affection. Snickers licks me the most when I give him a scratch behind his ears or anywhere for that matter or if I massage him, he licks like crazy!! I think he is showing he loves me since he licks so much. Thank goodness for his sweet breathe!! All the other licking, I just think they are curious, something smells interesting, so they lick it. |
My yorkie does this aswell!!! Glad to know she's not the only one!! |
Teddi licks everything too! Face, hands, feet, towels, floor, ground (outside), even other dogs' butts! I'm just hoping he won't catch anything bad by licking everything in sight! |
My Abby licks everything too, us if we let her, the rug,the couch pillows too. She never cleans herself however. I think it is because she is bored, I have tried putting a toy in front of her when she does it, but for two years, she continues to lick. I guess its just one of those compulsive things. Our poodle, dauchsand and poms and collies never did this. |
Rox is a licker too. At first I thought it ws wierd that she would like my legs and ankles when I get out of the shower. I stopped her. Maybe it's okay, huh? She always licks the sheets, pillowcases and me when I rub or massage her. I guess it is just a Yorkie thing. Should their tongues feel warm when they lick you? |

YT lollipop world rsmit02 Ditto on thanks for informative post by rsmit02. Choco our dominant male, exhibits similar behaviors. Assertively licks Scooby, cleaning his ears, penis, etc... Especially likes to lick wounds. This worked out well when Scooby developed a large sore, more like a whole from his IV treatments after 2nd head trauma. Scooby could not reach very well but Vet suggested after we moved to Tokyo from Bangkok, to allow wound to air and dogs to lick. It healed after a stuborn infection. Scooby's ears tend to get dirty and Choco's licking helps with the cleaning. Seems Scooby prefers to the drops and gauze from Vet. Choco also helps clean the gunk out of Scooby's eyes. Scooby tries to clean himself by licking paws and rubbing but no match for Choco's direct tongue. Choco's ears are very clean, and he also does good job of cleaning his own eyes via licking paws. If I have a scratch, rash, Choco likes to lick as well. Scooby likes todo the walk by quick lick flips. Both dogs do it to each other often as they pass. Often when someone returns Choco and Scooby like to give a quick lick as part of the greeting, welcome back along with the excited dancing about. Post shower is also a favorite time for a lick, guessing in part to welcome us back, but also fondness for dampness. They like to lick condensation from cold objects as well. Choco at the dog run(park) will often try licking other dogs, thought he was being friendly, but as rsmit02 enlightened me, more of a dominant behaviour. Scooby often likes to do a licking session feet, hands, arms for several minutes often just before a nap. Saw a tv program on a Japan polar bear who also loved to lick his handler, referred to it as "skinship" helped to relieve stress. Guessing this is similar for Scooby. Appreciate hearing about others licking behaviors and better understanding. |
Glad to find out my Bentley wasn't the only excessive licker! But he also walks all around the house nonstop with nose to floor....I guess sniffing. He's been here 6 months now so he is sure familiar with everything and I know it definitely isn't anything to do with potty. Any answers!?!?!? |
My Yorkie spends hours licking my husbands feet! He has dry skin, and the licking actually improves the condition of his skin':animal36 |
Licking Boomer licks everything, his toys are always wet, the couch, floor, sheets everything. I was wondering if something was wrong with him. But it sounds like that's what they do. Thanks everyone it helps. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:thumbs up:thumbs up |
