First puppy jitters over what kind of food..

I'm getting my first yorkie this friday and I'm wondering what kind/brand of food is the best for him. He's been on purina puppy chow already and he'll be 8 weeks next week. So if anyone has any tips.. Help me out! Thanks..

There are several good foods out there to choose from. I know several people here don't like Eukanuba and some do. I am feeding that to Lily and she is growing great guns. At the vet today she weighed 4 pounds and 4 months. At least she eats, that seems to be a problem some Yorkies have.

Wow! that's a question alot of us have asked  I couldn't recommend a certain type. as some of our babies either have sensitive stomach's or just wont eat it, So I would suggest asking your vet when you take him in for his exam. also there are sample packs of different foods at the vets sometimes at petco when they are introducing a new food. you can request one, try them and see which one that he likes and that agrees with him. Sorry I couldn't give you a better Idea, My two eat Natural choice> chicken meal, rice, & oatmeal and although they both like it and they do not have any loose stools, It might effect your little baby differently. :)

im giving Zoey Wellness puppy food she loves it. i tried a few before that and she really didn't eat her food but i guess it depends on the puppy..

Hello and congrats on your new baby! I feed my dog Eukanuba Lamb and Rice. Just a suggestion...if he is on Purina Puppy Chow now, get some of that to mix in with the new food you choose. Each day put less of the puppy chow and more of the new stuff until you eventually add no puppy chow in with his new food. If you just switch to a new food, it can really upset their tummy's, so make the switch slowly!

Some breeders will give you some of the food they have been eating so you don't have to buy a big bad of something you are only going to use for a week. Yes, even the smallest bag is a big bag when it comes to a yorkie.
I have been feeding Iams (dry only) since I got my first yorkie 5 years ago. I have never had any health problems and everyone is the right weight. Ok, well maybe she could use to lose 1/2 to 3/4 or a pound, but everyone else is the right size. 2 of my dogs have had dentals. My oldest had her teeth rotting out of her mouth when I got her so I had to and a couple of moths ago I took Lily in (the above mentioned). She walked in with a full set of teeth and was carried out with a full set of teeth. My other dogs have never needed them.

Maggie eats Iams Puppy food, and a little surprise mixed in with it. I crush it up and add a dab of warm water to it. I keep out a bowl of dry food just in case she gets the munchies. The little surprises in her food keeps her interested long enough to finish eating. If there is no surprise, then there is no eating. The surprises are usually a pinch of boiled chicken; boiled hamburger meat; pinch of weiner; scrambled egg. I don't use all of these, only one at a time. Congratulations on your new baby. When we got Maggie, it was just like bringing home a new baby from the hospital. We are still on the 2am PP trip outside, but that's okay. She is a very good baby and we love her so much that it hurts. Believe me when I say it hurts. Their little teeth are like fangs. We are working on NO BITE right now. She can sit, sometimes stay, comes whenever and now we are practicing bang, bang. Oh, and welcome to the YT. It is worth it's weight in gold on information.

I feed my yorkie Royal Canine dog food. It's a little expensive but she likes it. From 6-8 weeks old I fed her the Royal Canine Mini Baby Dog, then from 8 wks-10 months I fed her Mini Puppy, both of those foods by the way are specially formulated for small breed puppies. Now I feed her Royal Canine for Yorkshire Terriers. I also have a yorkie/chihuahua mixed male who didn't want to eat a thing when he first came home. I got him from a breeder in my hometown who breeds yorkies, so he was an accident, but anyway, since he wasn't eating his dog food I fed him Gerber baby food every 2-3 hrs until he started eating his food on his own. So if your baby comes home and doesn't want to eat you can try the baby food. Good Luck!!

You should let him with the food he have from the breeder . Changing too fast can make his little stomach upset .

Lil Bit also came home on Purina Puppy food......she 12 weeks old, was so tiny and not growing well so the breeder had continued mixing the Purina with ALOT of water.
When I got her home I realized she was eating more water than puppy food. I tried to gradually change her to Purina Pro Plan for Small Breed Puppies...(has little bity bites) and after a few weeks of trial and error and lots of runny poops she has done great.
When she finally did start eating better...and I think Pro Plan is better for the little ones than regular puppy food......she just grew and gained like a sponge soaking up all that good nutrition.
I did try almost all the others mentioned....great foods!! But it just seemed like the bites were too big for her ( she was only 1 pound @ 3 months)...
She is now 6 months old and 3 pounds 10 oz...and a tiny ball of ENERGY!!!!

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!! Keep us posted!!

Lil Bit's Mama,
I totally agree with you on the Purina Pro Plan. I am in the process of switching Maggie over to Pro Plan Puppy. My other dogs are Cattle Dogs (Heelers) and they have been on Pro Plan for years. They are in excellent condition, gorgeous coats, plenty of energy to do their jobs and has never been sick. I didn't realize until a few days ago that Pro Plan made a puppy food. It's a great food. It's also a little pricey, but well worth it.

Gucci is now 11 mts. I have been feeding her Eukunaba , switched over to the puppy Lamb and Rice , she likes it I mix some can food or a tsp of plain yogurt this is the only way she eats it...
When do I switch her over to adult food? She is about 6lbs. and will be a yr in June.

Thanks!

Hello! And congrats on your new babie!!!

anywho! i'd like to say that you should start out on a healthy high quality food! although i personally don't like Iams (www.iamscruelty.com) i think there are a lot of high quality foods such as:

**Innova
Canidae
California Natural
Artemis Osopure

I highly recommend Innova.. you can look at the ingredients here

www.naturapets.com

and if you'd like more information about food products, like what to avoid etc, go here:

Hey GucciMyGirl, typically you want to slowly but surely start your dog on adult food between 9 and 11 months. And since she's 6lbs you should shoot to feed her 1/3 to 1 cup of adult food once, or better twice a day. Hope my info has been helpful..

HisNameIsHarley 05-11-2005 05:07 PM

Thanks a lot for the info Yorkie Girl.. I've really been doing my food homework and it's absolutely insane how many different harmful "ingredients" are actually in these "name brand" dog foods. It's like a complete reality check for me and just today after taking my golden retrivier mix to the vet for the 3rd time for hot spots on her paws, terrible allergies etc. I've decided to totally change all my dogs diets. So far I've really been impressed by Royal Canin, Natural Balance, Lifes Abundance and Canidae. I'm really glad that I've joined YT.. :)
