patella luxation Hello, My 6 1/2 year old Yorkie is having patella luxation on both of her legs, she's having a lot of problem when she tries to walk. I'm having an appointment at my vet on May 25 and she'll probably have a surgery in the days following the appointment. Have any of your Yorkie had this surgery, and has it improved his/her condition? Has the patella luxation came back? Thank you. Sophie Quebec, Canada |
How do can you patella luxation on a Yorkie? It looks like his left front leg is twisted or sticking out. I'm very concerned about his left leg. |
Hi Latinrose, How old is your Yorkie? I've heard that symptoms of patella luxation (knee cap out of place) can be noticed on puppy, but it is more noticeable on older Yorkies. In mild cases, the knee cap may only slip out of place occasionally, causing the Yorkie to "hop" for a few steps, and then it may slide back into the groove on its own. In severe cases, the knee cap slips out of place more often, or is never in a normal position. It may not go back into the groove on its own and your veterinarian may need to perform a surgery. Also, the Yorkie may develop arthritis, as a result of patella luxation. I found a great article about the subject: http://www.dogsites.com.au/internet_..._luxation.html Sophie |
I posted this on another thread about my experience w/ luxating patella: Quote:
As to the luxation coming back, it's unlikely.. our vet said that in the many years he's been doing the surgery he's never had a dog come back with luxating patella again. Good luck! |
patella luxation Hi there! This is my first time here and this was exactly the topic (patella luxation) I was searching for. My Yorkie (Mia) is 3 years old. Probably like 2 years ago, she started to limp for a couple of seconds, then it would stop. This would happen about once in a month or two. I brought her to the vet and he was quick to say surgery. Of course I did my research on the internet and even called the breeder where I bought Mia. Surgery was only for the worst cases of patella luxation. Mia only has a stage 1 luxating patella (there are 4 stages, 4 being the worst kind). Then last Friday, I noticed that she was limping more than usual. I thought I'd wait a couple of days to see if it would get better, but by Tuesday I brought her to another vet (we moved). This vet was very thorough while doing an exam on Mia. He said that there was an unusal wear in the cartilage of her right knee. Usually the knee would slip in and out, but on her right knee, it would rub against the cartilage. He gave her Glucosamine that I have to give her for 2 weeks. If that doesn't work, he would like to take x-rays of Mia's knee, but that requires sedating her because they have to position the knee a certain way to x-ray it. Chances are the Glucosamine will be enough to rebuild her cartilage, but you never know, maybe there is more damage that we know. Poor thing, it just breaks my heart to see her limp like that. |
