Sorry to ask- I know this has be already be here somewhere but I can't find it. How much should I feed my dogs? One 11lber and 6lber. We wanted Harry to put on a few ounces, and Thor had gained some unwanted weight now. I searched online but couldn't find what I was looking for. Thanks, and sorry about the repeat question. |
Is there a recommendation on the side of the bag of food? I feed Dick VanPatten and I give Alphy a cup in the evening. It seems like not a lot though to me. He gets treats throughout the day too. From time to time I'll give him about half a scoop in the morning if he's looking around for food. good luck. |
i go by the outside of the pkg. layla is almost 4 lbs and should eat between 1/4 to 1/2 cup.. lol.. she done'st but she should.. sh'e more like 1/8-1/4 i free feed so she eats here and there during the day. |
i know nutro has it other brands prob do also its called weight maintance it will help thor loose his weight & & harry put some on we had our cats on it & it helped Tons |
I think it is going to depend on what food you are feeding. Some of the premium brands even say you may only feed half as much as some brands. For instance, this is from Canidae: Daily Feeding Guidelines Weight Puppies to 6 mos. Adults Light/Seniors 2-10 lbs. 1/2-1 1/2 cups 1/2-3/4 cup 1/4-1/2 cup 1-4.5 kg 60-170 grams 50-100 grams 30-50 grams Don't you love how they have a category for 2-10 pounds? A big difference there! |
My 6 lb'ers each eat 1/4 cup of dry kibble twice per day with about a tablespoon of chopped up boiled chicken added to the evening meal. I started out giving a bit more and when they left some in the bowl I gave a bit less each night until I came up with an amount that they finished in one sitting. They pee and poop normally and are both healthy weights for their size so I am confident I am feeding a good amount for them. |
My suggestion is to ask your vet. My vet said that the ration amounts given on pet food bags are often more than what a pet needs. This makes for more product sales. The size and activity of your dog, and whether or not he/she needs to gain weight, lose weight or just keep the status quo, along with what kind of food you are feeding will dictate how much to give. |
my vet only told me 3 times a day until closer to a year and then they should naturally only eat only twice a day. i've always just filled up the bowl i have for Remy and he'll just eat until he's full. now i just bowl feed him and he eats twice a day, maybe 3 but small portions, he's now 7 months. |
You guys have left some great tips, and points. I am aware that the bags, anc cans usually suggest more than what is really needed. With Thor being a very active dog, I used to feed him 2 a day 1/2 cup. Since we've had Harry though, I've stopped measuring his food, AND he's been getting a lot of wet food. Harry has been allowed to eat anything he wants, and however much because he needed to gain a bit of weight. I wouldn't describe Thor as fat...yet, he's just pushing it if we let him continue to eat this way. He won't eat nearly as much if we offer him dry food only. GO figure. I guess I'll give Thor a cup a day and Harry a half cup. I just hate to think that they might be hungry! |
