Plucking hair from the ears??? I have read and heard that we have to pluck the hairs from the inside of the ears. How do you know what hairs to pluck or when you need to pluck them. How often does it need to be done? Is this something that the groomer can take care of, or is it something that I need to take care of on a regular basis? If I need to do it, how often do I need to do it and where can I learn to distinguish the right hairs from the wrong ones? |
I'm scared it's going to hurt Otis, so I've never done it. I just trim them with scissors. I can't imagine pulling somethign out of my ear and it not hurting. :( |
Not sure how often it should be done, but when you take them to the groomers, they should do it. They have ear powder that makes it easier to pluck them. It is a heath reason for doing this. My Chester doesn't seem to mind having it done. Now, Gracie? That's a different story!!! I leave it for the groomer or my vet. |
Thank you- I think I will leave it to the groomer. Is every 5-6 weeks enough, or does it need to be done more often? |
Plucking the ear hair is better for the dog. It makes the ear cleaner and less likely to get infected. We (groomers) put ear powder in the ear and then lightly tug the hair and it comes out. For some reason this doesn't bother the dog. I have plucked tons of ear hair and hasn't really hurt any of the dogs that I have done. Plucking the ear hair also makes it so that the ears when dirty dont hold an odor. Kelly |
i do coco's ears once a month and clean them out really well. yes it really needs to be done because dirt and bacteria attaches to the hairs and make them more prone to ear mites and ear infection. the trick is to pluck it fast! i learned this with coco when i was plucking it slow it bothers him more than when i would do it fast.i pluck out all the hairs inside the canal making sure not to to touch any flesh, i don't stick it in his ear, just the hairs that are sticking out of the inner ear. since i started doing this his ear smells nice and clean and stays clean longer. hope this helps! |
The length in between plucking really varies for the dog. Some dogs dont have the hair grow back and some do. If you take the dog to the groomer regularly he/she will more than likely just check it and if it needs to be done they will do it. Otherwise remind them when you bring the dog in. Kelly |
Can you use regular baby powder? What kind of powder do you use? |
We have special ear powder that is sold in our store. I cant think of the name off hand but you should be able to get it just about anywhere dog supplies are sold. |
We just hold Yoda's ears out and then pluck it with a tweezer, a few at a time, but not like a clump at a time. Just pull it out really fast. Yoda doesn't seem to be annoyed by it at all, doesn't whine, whelp, cry, or bark. And I believe that's what they do at the groomers. We haven't used any powder ourselves... |
yeah that is pretty much what we do at work too Fasteddie, but we use the powder. the powder helps to clean the ears and makes it better for gripping onto the hairs. |
Wow! Thank you so much for all of the information. I feel more confident now. I think I will ask the groomer to show me which hairs to pluck, and what ones are okay to leave before I attempt it on my own. Thanks for all the help. Your are all the best.  2 thumbs up ! |
which hairs are we talking about? growing out of the ear canal? |
