Help! My Yorkie eats Poop!!! My 6 months old Yorkie is a very picky eater. I tried various dry foods as well as canned (Science Diet, Natural Choice, etc.) Today I caught her in the backyard playing with some poop and eating it. She takes Nutrical which she used to love and now refuses to eat. Does anyone have some advice for me? Why is she eating her poop and how can I get her to eat her food? Thanks so much! |
I have the same problem with my male, he loves to eat his, our girls, and the cat box is like a gold mine for him. People have told me he will grow out of it. I gave him some of those chewable things and it helped. http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...N=2026138&Ne=2 |
Lillie (5 1/2 months old) started doing this about a month ago!!! She will get into the cat box too sometimes if I dont' watch her.....She doesn't eat it and, it's not her poop,,..it's Sadies (3yr next month)....she plays with it!!! she picks it up and flings it in the air...I have little peices of poop all over the floor....If you find a way to stop this....please let me know! |
Crystal liked the taste of hers for a while as well. I tried Deter, pineapple, Accent and a few other things that I read about on here. What finally worked was what most people said... time. We limited her access as much as possible, and in time she began to ignore it. We really noticed a change at around 7-8 months old. It is nasty, but apparently somewhat natural, and thank goodness harmless (when it's there own at least). Best wishes on a solution. |
You all have no idea how happy I am to hear that Joey isn't the only furbaby to do this. It started with his own then the cats! The first time he did this and I didn't know he was in the cat box, I had given him a kiss and he smelled gross. I could have died! |
Oh join the club you all! I've tried several things, the last was Lawry's seasoning salt! Venus plays with hers more than eats it now, and she is about to turn 6 months! It can sure gross you out, especially when they wanna kiss you on the face...I'm like "oh no, you put poop in your mouth, and you want to kiss me? I don't think so". But she's starting to out grow it finally. I haven't caught her playing with much of it lately, and she quit eating it, thank God! Someone else said they like to keep thier "area" clean. I try to pick it up soon as I see it. Thats helped a lot too. |
Ok my Laddy Bella is 1 1/2 years old and she still eats it and my cats also  So if anyone has a cure please let me know :D |
I really don't think there is a definate cure! TJ and Roxy are 2 yrs. and I still have problems with this. It has gotten better but they still can't be trusted. I think TJ does it because he is in this constant (made-up in his mind) competition with Roxy. He doesn't want her to have ANY THING! Roxy doesn't do it as much, but she can and will too! I have just been trying to get it first. I have narrowed down there poop times. They will go 2x a day for the most part. I look for their 'have to poop' signs and then watch like a hawk. I praise and praise for going poop, then I pick it up and flush it. They know that after the flush then they get a treat - chicken jerky - their favorite! My next and last resort will be the coins in the can. They are deathly afraid of the coins in the can. So, if this behavior continues into the new year, I will have to 'set them up' separatly - giving them the opportunity to eat it and then - SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE the can! :p |
Mines sniffs it, but doesn't eat it, he waits till the ducks use it outside, then he's sniffing their poop. So I watch him carefully, but I've never seen him eat it. I may try the coins in the can trick if he get's out of line. Right now if he's misbehaving, I take a fly squatter and hit the wall and he takes off running. :D |
Welcome to the "poop eaters club of yorkietalk"! I have tried everything and all that works is getting there first. Karma will be 5 months old next week, but as I see some of the ages of the other dogs, I am doubtful if she will outgrow it. WHen she gets all hyper and wants to kiss, we just tell her,"No silly, you are a poop eater"! But we love her anyway! |
my shihtzu used to eat her poop. The vet gave us something to mix with her food that changed the taste of her poo...it worked for us! |
We also tried the vets stuff, it gave mine the runs! So I decided the poop eating was better! |
One of mine just started doing this a couple months ago and she is about to turn one. The other one - same age - loves the cat box. I keep trying to put the box where the dogs can't get to it, but it's hard to do when the dogs are smaller than the cat and can seem to get anywhere! So.... the general census is that Deter doesn't work?? omega |
poop eater Oh, I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. My Gizmo has been eating poop forever. Dog poop, rabbit poop, any kind of poop he can find in our big back yard. The problem is he picked up a nasty case of round worms, the vet said probably from the rabbit poop. The only thing you can do is try to pick up poop asap. My dog got really sick from the round worms, but is on medication now to cure it. Good luck |

Izzy tries to eat his poop too. Usually what I do is remove the poop from the pad after he is done and flush it down the toilet. The other day I didnt move it fast enough and he started to eat it. So just get rid of it immediately, out of sight out of mind! Hope this helps!:) |
I have a 8 mo. Maltese and a 6 mo. Yorkie who both eat poo. I have been giving them treats of pineapple tidbits everytime they pee and poo for about two weeks now and it is cutting down on the poo eating. I'm just beginning to see some results after two weeks. I used to feed them pieces of baby chicken sticks as rewards but now its pineapple, which they love. Every chance I get I stuff their little mouths with pineapple and they love it. I feel so evil...hehe...having an ulterior motive...but hey, they like it, I like it....we are all happy...and it's healthy...lol |
Msgabby- What kind of pineapple do you give them? I tried putting a little canned in their food and they turned their noses up at it. Do you use dried fruit? I bet mine would like that. Plus I could cut it up pretty small. Karma doesn't eat hers as bad as she used to, but I would like to banish the habit for ever. It's gross! Thanks for your input! |
Remy also did this every so often, he's now 7 mos, and i asked my Vet. she said that its just natural for dogs to want to sniff and eat what comes out of them (even throw up, they'll try to lick back up). she said just try to catch him and tell him 'no' each time, he'll eventually stop trying to or they will grow out of it. |
Poop  Bailey has a fondness for Cat POOP. I like his kisses anyway, I just have to brush his teeth fairly often, like daily since he sleeps with us. I figure there must be something good tasting, at least to him in the  POOP. Best wishes for Christmas to all from Bailey the POOP eater and his pet, Samc |

Eating Stools Stool eating can be attributed to behavior learned as a puppy. Every litter has a "cleanup" puppy who is required to keep the den clean. If your puppy was the one, then he's still doing his job. Try to make the stools distasteful to him by adding For-Bid (available online or through vets) or Deter (online or pet shops) to his food. Some people have success adding canned spinach. Stool eating can also be due to lack of food and or nutrients. If you are feeding a supermarket food, you should beef it up now. If you are feeding an alternative food, make sure it is professional. If your dog is not fat, you may want to increase the quantity of food. Vitamin supplementation is also a MUST! Stool eating is also a means of getting attention, good or bad. When you see your dog eating his or another dog's stool, don't say or do anything. Try to get to the stools before your dog does and add the hottest Tabasco or hot sauce you can find, so he rejects them on his own. Article by Dr Jane Bicks, DVM |
I started my four on Dis-Taste from Drsfosterandsmith.com. It seems to be helping. You have to give it at least two weeks to work too. Deter didn't work on them. I just change their food back to IAMs mini chunks from Nutri Natural. I couldn't stand the stink of their poop on the Nutri. I have better smelling air again. lol |
My boy had been a poop eater ever since I got him at 12 weeks old.He loves his poop, my budgie's poop and other dog's poop when we go out (he doesn't get to it but he tries to drag me to it).Now he is about 6 months old, he doesn't eat my bird's poop as much anymore and as for his own poop, I usually clean them up before he does anything unless at the odd times where he grabs one real fast and run top speed and eats them before I get to him. I sure hope he grows out of it. Its gross. |
dcelmo...I feed them canned pineapple, but I dont put it on their food. I buy the slices and cut them into small wedges (or buy the canned tidbits). I give it to them as a treat for going poo or pee on the potty pad or doing something I want them to do. They love it. It would taste gross on food....I would probably agree with them. |
Yes she's still eating it too. I don't knoe what else to do. I've tried all the suggestions that was given. No luck. It's very upsetting. She knows that she is doing it wrong. I try to get to it before she does but she is fast. :( . HELP. |

I read from one of the reputable breeders that she sprinkles a little meat tenderizer but that didn't seem to help. Maybe someone else would benefit from that tip. :) Keep me in the loop if anyone has other ideas to address this stomach churning Yorkie issue. |
