Advice Needed puppy refuses to eat Maddie is now 13 weeks old. When I first brought her home I kept her on the puppy food the breeder had her on. My problem is this, I have a 6 y/o lab (Lexi), Maddi stopped eating her food and wants the adult dog food like Lexi eats. She just refuses to eat a puppy mix. Nutritionally this can't be good for her. She's not losing weight, infact she's growing/gaining. I don't see anyway around this unless I put Lexi on the puppy food. Lexi will eat anything, including cat food! LOL I want to know what should I give Maddi to supplement what she's not getting? I'm sure there is less protien, calicium, and more fat, etc. I think cottage cheese might take care of the protien and calcium. Is there somewhere I can find this information? How about Vitamins? Should I feed Lexi the puppy food? |
I periodically give Gracie adult dog food to give her variety. If that is what Maddie will eat, I would say that it is better than nothing and let her eat it. Maybe try stirring in a bit of her puppy food with it. You did not say if you were feeding wet, dry, or both, but I have also found that when Gracie goes on a food strike, if I mix in some chicken baby food she will gobble it up. Your little one might just be bored with eating the same thing all the time. Try stirring in some treats like scrambled eggs, cheese, boiled chicken, etc. |
Re: Not eating You should take a look at Life's Abundance. It is for all stages of a dogs life. It doesn't have the fillers such as corn, wheat, gluten etc, and it doesn't have by-products which can be anything (beaks, feathers, rendered animals, fur and just about anything else. It is a healthy food and my Monty loves it. |
Canidae and Natural Balance are also all life stage dog foods. I am trying to switch to an all life stage food too so that all 3 of mine can eat the same thing. For some reason, they all think the other's food is better. Kids! lol! |
You really shouldn't give a puppy adult dog food...It is too rich for their tiny bellies. I have this problem with Lillie and Sadie...Sadie will be 3 next month and Lillie is 5 months old. When I first brought Lillie home I would mix her kibbles with hot water then mash it up...(she didn't have bottom teeth) Sadie wouldn't go near it...Then when I started feeding her the kibbles dry...this is when Sadie wanted to eat Lillies food...So.....I went out and bought the same brand but the adult formula (I feed nutro Ultra puppy and nutro ultra adult)...I have to feed Sadie on a chair otherwise Lillie will eat her food...I notice her poop gets loose and she gets gassy if she eats adult food...I would really keep the pup on puppy food and maybe feed them in seperate rooms. Thanks for the responses! I think I will try to find a dry food that has the stages. At least she might think she's eating the same thing! LOL. I also might try separating them, Maddi is just too worried about what Lexi's doing. Lexi has been soooo tolerant of Maddi's curiosity, god love her! |
