Chicken question If chicken can be a source for allergies why is chicken breast always recommended when a dog is sick? |
I didn't know that chicken was a source for allergies. learn something new everyday. I guess it is like us humans with the chicken soup thing.:rolleyes: |
Dogs can be allergic to anything. Chicken and rice is recommended for an upset stomach because it is bland, just like you would eat crackers. And if a dog is allergic it could just be itching, not stomach problems. Anything can cause an upset stomach - like eating a food that is too rich or hard to digest (like rawhide). Sometimes boiled ground beef is recommended too. |

Any protein can cause an allergic reaction. Chicken might be listed as a common cause just because the majority of dogs eat chicken. Chicken is good for a dog, just not one that is allergic to it, just like nuts are perfectly good for a human that isn't allergic to them. Common food allergens for canines include: beef, pork, chicken, eggs, whey, corn, and soy. |
Thank you. The reason I asked is because Jo licks his feet at nap or bedtime, no hair missing or anything, he just licks them. I don't know if this is a comfort thing for him or if it's allergies so I was going to try the home made food recipe for him and see if I can figure it out. The chicken had me stumped though so I thought I'd ask. |

Those are great foods but there are some out there with duck or venison for dogs with allergies to chicken. Canidae now makes a lamb & rice version too. If you buy your Innova from a local pet store maybe ask them about foods with no chicken in it?? |
When you are thinking it could be a food allergy (of course, it could be something on your grass, flea bites, a cleaner your mopping with, etc., or just something in the air) you put the dog on a protein he hasn't been exposed to - so if they have never had lamb it is just as good as trying duck. They can't develop an allergy to something they haven't been exposed to. Some will go on to "create" an allergy in time against the lamb and then you will move on to another source of protein like duck. The carbohydrate (rice, oatmeal, potatoe) should also be a "new" one for your dog when going through testing. The new diet should be fed for 12 weeks with no treats, if no response then most likely it is not a food allergy or some other obscure ingredient further down the list. |
