Dew Claws...should I get them removed when Lexy gets spayed? She seems to be catching them on things a lot. I wish her breeder had done it when she was born! What do y'all think? |

Having them removed at the same time that she well be spayed is ok . Removal of dewclaws is not a major surgery . |

I've wondered about this too. Is it typical for breeders to leave them on the front legs or should they be removed from all 4 legs? |

I dont even know what they are... I know Stewie got his removed. Anyone wanna tell me? :) |

1 Attachment(s) Dewclaw is the upper nail that you can see in the pic . |

Hmmm. Stewie still has those on his front paws. Great. |

Mackenzie has 1 on her right front paw....odd |

Zsa Zsa have one on the right paw but she is too old and sick to have it remove , I cut it short . Jade don't have any dewclaws . |

 bump! |

Elizabeth - don't you love how you have to bump -- sometimes after 15 minutes!? lol |

I had trouble finding a vet that would do both the dew claws AND the tail docking as I wanted to have it done at the same time. I guess it's a personal preference. I'm glad I had it done though but the only thing bad I've heard about leaving them there is that they do get caught on things. When I had Bentley and Bitsy at the vet this past week for shots the lady checking me out asked me about the tail docking and said that she couldn't stay in there and watch it when it was being done. She told me that they squirmed and squeeled like it hurt really bad  She did NOT have to tell me that! |

I don't know what they are either.. I am wondering if mocha has hers |

Honey had all four of her dew claws removed last week with her spay. She is 6mths old. When I took her to the vet for her spay, he said she needed them removed because they tend to get caught on things and then will rip. Of course, she had all of them. One was just a nail growing out of her leg like maybe they tried to remove it when she was a baby. She did great, I take her tomorrow to get all of her stitches out. They had to shave a part of every leg, but that will grow back. I am glad I got it over with and now won't have to worry about them. Stacie |

Eensor - If they are getting caught on things it would probably be best to have them removed and be done with it. |

How much does it cost to get the dog declawed? When is the dog too old to be declawed? |
