Scooting.. should I be concerned? I am sorry to ask a silly question...I dont know if this topic was already discussed I am new at owning a small dog.. but my Sam is scooting from time to time.. is this a symptom of something. Should I be worried? :confused: :( |
His "pookuth" might need its anal glands expressed. The vet can do it! :D |

Anal glands are gland right inside the anas. They usually extract on their own when a dog poops, but may not extract completely and have to be extracted manually. You can do it yourself if you know what you are doing or you can have the vet or groomer show you how to do it. On average it should be done about once a month. Some dogs need it more than others. I just do it when I groom my dogs. When they start scooting that is usually the first thing I think of. It can also be worms or their butt is just irritated. |
My brothers lab likes to do the "train" on the carpet, too! :p They have to bring him to get his anal glands drained every two weeks! You might want to try and bring him to the vet to get it checked |
Thanks for the info ladies... but why do they have to be extracted? or Drained? Does it mean Sam cant poo? Because he is pooing just fine.. I find his terds everywhere :rolleyes: Pls educate me? :( |
It's nothing to worry about at all! They can still poo poo! Has he been wormed? It could be worms, but probably just needs to get "spressed" :eek: as Lexy would say! |
I found this online. Maybe it will help you out a little bit. The anal glands have no known function in the modern world. They are "vestigial" organs (like your appendix) meaning that they once had a function but as the dog and cat evolved, the anal glands lost that function. The best theory is that dogs once used the very pungent smelling anal gland secretion to mark their territories in the wild. Wolves and other wild cousins of the dog are known to do this. Also, dogs will occasionally express (meaning to squeeze secretion out) their anal glands when they are frightened, so it is thought the secretion may have been a defensive repellent (like a skunk). |
I have heard that it could be fleas. If there is contact with water the fleas go inside the butt and can cause irritaion. |
eensor and Yorkies*forever thanks a million for the info. By the way Sam has been dewormed... I bought some heartgard chewable tablets at his last shot session. I will def make an appointment to take my pookus to the vet. Rather be safe then sorry.This board is the best! :) |

Mine used to scoot, but when I went to get his glands expressed, they told me that he expressed them himself... never found the "tracks" |
I have too have scrappydoos done about every 4 months I"VE NOTICED A COUPLE OF TIMES HIM SCOOTING LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GONNA HAVE TO HAVE EXPRESSED. :D |
