What to do about dandruff
 

I just got my little male yorkie about a month ago and he had what I think is dandruff. I have tried baby shampoo, tee tree oil but the problem is still there. What is the best and safest thing to treat him with. I have heard not to use certain over the counter product but everyone tells me something different.

Sounds like he has dry skin!!! Start from the inside-out. I would make sure that he is on a diet free of corn, and I would give him some source of omega fatty acids. What do you feed him now? Are you supplimenting his diet? Could you be over washing him?

He is on science Diet puppy. Is there something extra I should be giving him? I want him to be healthy. The vet told me to wash him in dish detergent but that would really dry his coat out. I dont know what to do.

Lemon Joy is the best. But whatever you use to shampoo him, be sure to thoroughly rinse. Sometimes soap left in the fur can look like dandruff.

First of all, Science Diet is not a good brand of food. Most yorkies are allergic to corn and I am certain that Science Diet has corn in it. I would switch to a higher quality food that doesn't contain wheat or corn products. Any food off this list is an EXCELLENT choice of food that you really can't go wrong with. I would also start supplementing his food with Omega 3 and 6 fatty acid supplements. Most people on this site use Missing Link supplement. I have been having a problem with dandruff myself. After trying SEVERAL different shampoos, I finally found one that did the trick. It is called High Cascades 4 in 1 Shampoo & Conditioner. It has Emu Oil in it and it really cleared up my yorkie's dandruff. You can get it HERE. It may seem pricey, but it is super concentrated. You have to mix it with water to dilute it so it will last you forever. You can also get a trial size HERE.

I know firsthand how hard it is to get rid of dandruff. I was battling it for months until I discovered the combination of super premium quality food, Missing Link supplement, and that shampoo. Now his dandruff is completely cleared up! :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup:

When you bath him ALWAYS use a shampoo made for dogs, you can use an all natural like one from here Espree http://espree.com/productDetail.asp?id=101 , and when you rinse use a good dog conditioner. I use coat handler, or pet silk, mix your conditioner in a container of water and add a few drops of pet silk liquid silk, or silk spirits to the rinse. Do not put too much of either in the container. I use a plastic kool-aid pitcher and use just a few drops of the oil, and a small amout of conditioner and mix well. Then pour over the dog and leave in. The oil helps to moistuirize the sikn. After a couple of bathes his skin should improve. If you use too much, he will look oily in a couple of days, but that is not harmful, just rebathe.

Diet plays an important role in heathy hair and skin. I had a pup once that got dry skin. I got this oatmeal shampoo from the vet ($10 a bottle). 2 shampoos was all it took and there were no more flakes.

Do you use a conditioner on him? That may help.

It is not unusual for puppy dandruff and you can use either Sebolux shampoo from the Vet or you can try Head and Shoulders dandruff shampoo. Do him about once a week it will take a few weeks to clear it up completely.

Our vet and groomer have both suggested an Oatmeal shampoo, and that seems to work great. You can find these types at any local pet store. Hope that helps! :thumbup:

Thanks I will try the 4 in 1 shampoo and the other products also. I want him to look great for Christmas. He will be going back to see his first mommy so he needs to look his best. He really doesn't act like it bothers him but I know it can't be good for him.
