Last DHLPP shot, allergic? Howie will be getting his last set of shots in a few weeks. The Vet recommended we do his rabies shot seperately because they say most small dogs are allergic to the "L" part in the last shot. I forgot what she said it was. But, she said it was a preventative shot for some kind of liver disease. I was wondering if most yorkie owners have experienced any allergic reaction to the last set of their shots. I asked the front desk why they would administer the shot if they know most small dogs are allergic to it (especially because she said there is only a very small number of dogs that do get that liver disease). She said the Vet will determine that day if he should have that part of the shot or not, but I'd like some input beforehand. I asked what they'd do if he does have a reaction and she just aid, bring him in and we'll give him something so the swelling will go down. That doesn't comfort me at all. Plus, not to mention the extra expenses. Thanks in advance! =) |

I always give the Rabies shot seperate. I also don't give Cali the Lepto shot and my vet is fine with that. |

Is Lepto the part that I'm talking about? That prevents them from that liver disease? Just wondering if we're talking about the same things. Thanks! |

Lepto is the one that is the most likely to give a reaction to small dogs. I'm not sure what it's for only that it's not very common in the area I live. |

 thank you, patti! |

Leptosis is a disease they can get from drinking contaminated water |

It might be Lepto vaccine, and usually it's a part of puppy booster shots. My pup had a very bad allergic reaction to it, he got very sick, had to go to ER for 24 hours, but that was only vaccine that he reacted bad to... Even Rabies shot that I heard knocks the pups out for a day didn't bother him at all - he was ready to play whole day long as always. I guess it's just an individual reaction a pup might or might not have... |

If thats the shot they get in a series, made Venus pretty sick for the first night. That was the first time I'd taken her. The second time, she just acted puny for a few hours, and same for the 3rd time. That first night scared me to death! I kept giving her Neutra-Cal. Her butt was also sore from the shot. Next morning, she was fine, like nothing happened. I know my vet doesn't give shots that aren't necessary for my region, so I continued the series of shots. |

My vet doesn't give Lepto to ANY of his dog patients...He has had some bad experiences with it...Lillie had her last series of shots a couple of weeks ago..she will be getting her rabies the week after next..my vet gives the rabies seperatly too. |

Okay, so I'm guessing for the most part, people would not recommend getting the Lepto. I'll see what my Vet says and if she thinks he'll be okay with it, I may just tell her I'm okay without it. I'd rather not have Howie sick. Plus, my appointment is on a Monday evening and I wouldn't be home with him the next day to see if anything is wrong with him. |

None of my Yorkies get the Lepto vaccine. My vet will not give it just too many reactions. My breeder also had me sign in the contract to not give Lepto vaccine. I say do not take a chance. |

My yorkie Lulu had a serious reaction to Lepto. Shortly after we got in the car from getting the shot she became unresponsive. She was like in a zombie like state. I was scared and the vet gave her something to counteract it. She has had no lasting negative effects from it. I since then will not ever give it to any of my yorkies, now or in the future. However, I have friends who have had no problems. I have not heard or experienced any problems with the rabies. If you choose not to have Lepto just tell them you don't want it but educate yourself or ask them to fill you in on the things to avoid like standing water, etc. It is more prevelent to us not in the city I believe as it can come from the urine of wild animals, I think. I am a little angry that no one at my vets even told me there could be a problem, and at that time I did not know about YorkieTalk to learn from others yet. Hope this helps you at least a little. |

I'm really sorry you, and your baby, had to find out the hard way. I'm so glad I found Yorkietalk as well. It's been REALLY helpful! But, yes, I'm glad they did mention that there may be some reaction to it. I will definitely not give him the Lepto shot and I will definitely research and ask the Vet many questions. Thank you again for all the responses! |
