Getting ready to have pup neutered -few questions Hi, my Pepper's going to turn 6 months at the end of the month... (wow doesn't the time fly??). We went to the vet yesterday for his rabies vaccine and I had a talk about neutering. He said I'll need to bring him in at 8 am and pick up at 5 the same day (I'd be a wreck having to leave him overnight! ). They use isofluorine, no barbituates. The blood tests for kidneys and liver are done a few days in advance. I have a question about shaving the paw... He said they put a caterer in just in case something goes wrong during surgery and they need to put the dog on IV immediately, it's more of a precaution, there's always a risk though, as with every surgery. He'll also need his tear ducts drained ( most probably), but at least teeth fell out on their own :) . Is there anything I forgot to ask the vet?? I remember seeing a thread about no shaving of paws during such procedure, what do you Guys think? |
When I took Scampers teeth in to get pulled, they shaved his paw and it is a good thing to because he ended up needing an iv. I woulden't worry about them shaving the paw, it is just hair it will grow back. The way they shaved Scampers was so that the hair above the shaved part covered it so you coulden't even see that he had no hair on the one part. Sometimes they can get to the vein without shaving it but if they can't they need to shave it, otherwise they could risk damaging the vein. I always tell them I prefer them not to shave it if they can but if they have to it is alright with me. |
Raggs is super hyper and he is 5 months. Did the neutering help with that at all? I figure a lot of it is that he is being a puppy but I'd like some feedback. |
That is good news that they don't use barbituates and they use isoflourine gas. I wouldn't worry about shaving the paw. It is just a precautionary measure. Better safe than sorry. Everything else sounds good. I can't think of anything else that you've missed. |
I agree, better safe than sorry, I guess he'll have to put up with leg warmers for a while :D :D |
