heartworm pills in winter months? I live in northern Illinois and was wondering if I should give my puppies the heartworm pills all winter long? I thought they could only get heartworm via insects, and since they are long since dead, it would be ok to stop for winter? Teresa |
My vet stops mine for winter. Mosquitoes are dead from the cold. |
i think it depends on where u live. i would consult with your local vet. |
I'm still giving Rocky his. We get real wierd weather in northern IL, like these past few days it has been really warm, but remember that weird on/off snowfall we had last month? Also, I don't think it's only mosquitoes that carry heartworm and other pathogens. Better to be safe than sorry :) |
I'm in Milwaukee... I keep my pup on the heartworm meds all year 'round. The weather has been so odd here lately (30s one day, 60s the next) and the pills for these small dogs are so inexpensive.... IMO, better safe than sorry. |
My vet said to give them year round, but I was wondering the same thing myself. Actually heartworm is not real prevalent in the northern climate, it's more so in the swampy areas of the country. |
I live in Illinois and I stop in October. I still believe the less cheimicals I give them the better. Besides mine are rarely out in the Winter months. |
I think it would depend on where you live too! I live in MS and it was 76 degrees here today! Just a few days ago it was 50 something! Our weather is odd so I keep mine on them! |
I stop giving it to mine in October and start giving it back to them in March |
My vet said to use it year round . karen, the lady i got kandy and Frankie from, also told me she keeeps hers on it year round. if i stop mine I will have to have them all retested before he will let me restart it. That's a lot of money to pay out all at one time. |
Mine only get heartworm until december...I live in central mass and we get alot of cold...and snow...I dont like to give the girls meds if it's not necessary. |
Listen To Your Vet, It's The Only Safe Way to Go My guys get Interceptor. It not only prevents heartworm, but other worms, like whipworm, roundworm, etc. I let mine in the yard even in the snow, and several stray cats do poops in everyone's yard. I just don't know if my guys will ever try to taste another animal's poops. I give it all year long, and next Spring, I'm switching to Sentinel, which is Interceptor with the flea egg and larve killer. Be sure, please ask your vet what is the safest thing to do depending on which product you use. I use Frontline all year long, too. Many people stop at the first sign of cold weather, but there may be eggs in your house that will develop into adult fleas. Why risk it at the expense of our babies' health. Better to pay for the products now then the hospital bill later. |
I think it is probably perfectly safe to stop it, but be advised your vet may require a blood test to refill your prescription if he is aware of you stopping. Better check with the vet so you don't have to go through the expense of the test and put your dog through drawing blood. Also, some heartworm medications also aid in parasite (worm) control. |
If u keep your pup on it all year round, they won't have to test for heartworms. Also, it prevents ur pup from getting round worms and hook worms! well worth it to keep them on it |
My vet says all year long but, I do stop in the winter even with fronline too.. and i have a baby that is 18 yrs..I guess it is up to you... but agree with the Blowery less meds the better.. |
