Question regarding teeth pulling? I took Hootie in this morning to be spayed. I dropped her off at 7:45am and they called me at 8:40am to tell me that she had made it out of surgery fine and she was doing well. The vet usually makes spay/neuter patients stay overnight, but they are letting me pick Hootie up this evening and not spend the night if I promise to keep her crated, and warm, and well taken care of. Of course I will. ;) When I dropped Hootie off this morning, I asked them to pull her retained baby teeth, but when they called they said that they did not notice that she had any retained baby teeth. I know that she has been losing teeth left and right, but I know for sure that her canines were still baby teeth bc I could feel the adult teeth cutting through the gum. They said that all her teeth were so tiny that they really couldn't tell a difference between the baby teeth and the adult teeth unless there were doubles, which they didn't see any of. And, since they couldn't tell a difference, they said they didn't want to pull any teeth until the adult teeth were in all the way. I had a feeling this was going to happen. I am a little perturbed because I waited a little longer to have her fixed so they could pull her baby teeth at the same time so I wouldn't have to pay and have her put down again to get teeth pulled. My vet did say that if she needed baby teeth pulled later, I could bring her back in and they would give her just a tiny bit of gas and pull those really quickly and I wouldn't have to pay. Hootie is 6 months old today. Do you think she has MORE baby teeth than just her canines? Or should she be done teething by now except for the canines? Anyone else have any thoughts on how the vet handled this? |
Well that sucks. If anyone should know the difference between adult and baby teeth it should be the vet. I don't blame you for being irritated. Now poor hootie will have to go under again, unless you just wait it out till she's 1 year and watch the teeth fall out like I did with Coco :D I had Coco spayed at 4 months, and she didn't have all of her teeth out yet. But within 6 months they were all out and only her canines weren't falling out, they were tough. But after lots of tug of war and hard treats, they both fell out :p YAY Hootie, kisses and hugs for a rough day. |

Sissy was spayed at 7 months and had double canines, so those were pulled at that time. Hopefully Hootie will lose all her baby teeth on her own. It is possible she might still have a couple months of baby teeth. |
By about 7 months most of Charlie's teeth had come in... He retained just about every one... Charlie had two rows of teeth, so it was obvious which ones needed to come out, but my vet did x-rays to make sure they had gotten 'em all so we wouldn't have to do it again... Unless the adult teeth are in and sitting next to the babies, you can't really tell which are which are which and you don't want to extract adult teeth unless it's necessary.... I guess you'll just have to play the wait and see game now.... PS. Charlie had the double canines, a couple retained molars and three or four extra incisors. His mouth was a mess! |
My vet was able to differentate between the baby teeth and the adult teeth and pulled 4 of mines baby teeth when they were spayed and neutered |
