Raw VS Cooked Food  When I go to my local Health food store, they sell frozen raw meat for dogs. It's made by: Doggy Deli here in Illinois www.doggydelifood.com The Raw diet is 95% beef and 5% top quality fruits and vegies. They say the diet helps avoid disease such as: diabetes, heart and kidney failure as well as chronic illnesses like allergies, infections, digestive disorders, skin rashes and joint inflammation or arthritic conditions. I purshased one 1/4 lb. pkg. of ground tenderloin and gave some to Molly and she licked the plate clean and wanted more.:animal36 However I haven't spoken to my vet about this. Have any of you ever tried this diet and what do you think? The Web-site gives you alot of info on this diet. |

I've heard good things about raw diets, but I would go for chicken rather than beef, as beef is definitely higher in fat which can lead to pancreatitis in Yorkies. There are several companies that have raw food diets for dogs. The concept of raw meat grosses me out though. |
I have never heard of a raw diet but IMO....It just doesnt' sound good to me..I would worry about bacteria, ecoli and salmonella... |

I bought the chicken madallions when Buddy was sick last year. Thinking it was the food giving him diahrea and vomiting I bought it. I called the vet, who had me buying all different kinds of food and he said not to give it to him because of bacteria, ecoli and salmonella. I threw away the bag of food. As it turned out I did change vets and the new vet wormed him and he was better in 48 hrs. This after 3 months of worry. Yes, his stools were checked by the original vet. It turned out to be male parasite in his intestines! They don't lay eggs. I have to say I do know someone who swears by this diet. She has two Norfolk terriers who have stomach and skin problems. They are thriving on it. Problems gone also. |
I wouldn't feed it to my pets if its not good for us I wouldn't give it to them;) |
Though I've never tried it, I've researched it and I think there's some definite benefit to raw diets. It's more biologically natural for a dog. Some people refer to it as BARF - Biologically Appropriate Raw Feeding. And by the way - dogs aren't susceptible to salmonella and such the way humans are, so don't worry about that. Think of what dogs ate in the wild! Cooking and processing kills most of the good enzymes found in raw meats and vegetables. So I'd say if you want to try it, go ahead, but introduce it slowly by mixing raw meat with kibble, until you're at 100% raw. There are many good books on the market with more information about how to prepare your dog's meal from scratch. It's actually much less expensive than kibble in the end, if you're willing to dedicate time to preparing and freezing your baby's meals ahead of time. I'm going to start to introduce my little guy to raw when he's a year old. |
I think you should ask your vet. He/she knows Molly and and will give you the advice. |
Pixie was on the raw diet about a year (she started around 16 weeks) and Charlie has been on it about 6 months... Not a single problem to date. There's been a number of threads on YT and there's a ton of info on the 'net. A few searches should give you plenty of reading material... |
I wouldn't feel comfortable feeding Coco a raw diet. Too many bacteria issues and other things for me to worry about. I will stick with the organic kibble :D |
