reverse sneeze? toby had kennel cough when he was young, i know what that sounds like and it is not kC...... so.... he does this weird thing where he acts like he has the hiccups but it is really air going in his nose instead of breathing out his nose and he makes a funny little "snork :confused: " .... its hard to explain, its nothing serious hes only done it a couple times i was just wondering if it was the reverse sneezing (if its not then it is probably him just inhaling stuff from outside, but i just thought ide ask) |
i'm wondering the same thing for my little Ginger, it's scary sounding.. i think she can't breathe, but then she's all happy and giddy as usual after. so i want to check on this thread again cause i'm curious to know as well. |
It sounds like inverted sneezes. All dogs get them. My parents Yorkapoo gets them when he gets ttooooooo excited. You can either just calm them down. Or a Golden breeder once told us to cover the dogs nose for a couple of seconds(2-4) and it would stop. You do it to help the dog and not hurt it, so be careful. Hope this helps :) |
Our second Yorkie did that all you have to do is gently put your palm flat up against their nose for a few seconds and they will stop. : |

I once read that you can blow gently at their nose - I think it is essentially the same as covering it - not sure. It works for the most part. But the method that tends to work for me is to distract my yorkie by pretending that I heard a noise or saw something surprising. If I do that, he'll immediately stop and control his breathing to check what it is that got my attention. |
Both Simon and Hallie do this! I distract them as well and it works to calm them down. The first few times I heard it I freaked out though! |
You ladies are great!! Wow ladies thanks for the advice... Sam hasnt done this yet, but my sisters yorkie does it alot.. especially when he wakes up in the morning and sees everyone.. she was scared he was choking.. I will let her know. Thanks! :) |
Stewie makes a noise that sounds like that. It's weird. It sounds like hiccups though. Is there such a thing as dog hiccups? |
Maggie did that very same thing the other day. She was sitting on my lap and all of a sudden she starts this harfing. This went on for a minute or so. Finally I got an ice cube out of my glass and she was licking it and stopped the harfing.. I was told that if you hold their nose, it will force them to take a breath through their mouth, and it will stop then too. I broke out the Yorkie Dr. Spock book and it said nothing to worry about. |
Stewiesmom.... Hiya! To answer your question... Yes Yorkies do hiccup! Sam does it all the time.. its funny! He does it mainly in the morning... I think its the cold. I feel so bad for him though.. I am afraid his tummy may start aching... :animal-sm |
Reverse sneezing This is rather normal in small breeds, especially yorkies. It will be fine and no nee dto worry about medical attention. Sometimes it helps when you gently rub your yorkies neck. It may go away faster. |

Hiccups and Honking Carib had the hiccups when he was young (under 6 months). Vet said nothing to worry about - guess they go through this stage. He started to make this "honking" kind of noise about the same time when the hiccups stopped. From what I have read, Yorkies tend to "reverse sneeze". They stand erect with head shoved out, eyes open, and legs slightly bowl-legged. When this happens, you can rub their throat till they swallow and this usually makes it stop. If by chance they have a rasping cough with this - see a Vet immediately as it could be a sign of a collapsed trachea. |
