Sneezing, not coughing Hi. We've just added an adorable Yorkie (our first!) to our household (we have two other dogs - a Lhasa and a Shih Tzu.) Bart, our baby Yorkie (12 weeks old), joined the family about 8 days ago. On the 6th day, he started sneezing - quite a lot. I took him to the vet yesterday, and she told me it was likely a collapsed trachea, typical of small breeds, and that there was nothing to be done. However, from everything that I've read, a collapsed trachea is more of a honking cough from the mouth - right? Bart is sneezing from his nose - with a little sneeze spray - and his mouth is closed when he does it. And, his nose is often moist after the sneeze - sometimes a little runny. It doesn't seem to be a "reverse sneeze" either - again, because his mouth is closed. He often sneezes while running around - but he has also sneezed while laying calmly in my arms. I'm stumped. He's had the kennel cough preventative vaccination, as well as the shot for distemper. He's still playful and has an appetite, but he sneezes constantly. Has anyone else had a similar situation with their Yorkie? Thanks. |
I would assume allergies. Your best bet would be to go get a second opinion. Thats what i would do. Im sure that theres animal allergists (sp?) out there that specialize in allergies and such if your possitive its only a sneeze. Our furbabies are too precious and important to risk one persons "opinion" on our dogs issues. Sorry its not much help. Hope everything works out though!! |
mine sneeze's too It could be allergies...my older yorkies does that. She will sneeze and sneeze and sneeze and sneeze .When the grass has just been cut, If i spray air freshener, when she get nervious. etc. Does he seem to scratch himself alot like he has flees ? There is a web site to check what your vet told you he has-see if the systoms match what your baby has ...good luck i hope he gets to feeling better. keep us posted. www.ivis.org also check the food he is eating ...i changed food with mine and it seemed to help. |
Bart's sneezing Thanks Hercules Dad and YorkieGirl2 for your quick responses! :) YorkieGirl2, in response to your question about itching. For the first couple days, Bart was scratching his one ear - but that seems to have tapered off unless I'm so obsessed about his sneezing nose that I'm not noticing the ear scratching any more. We do live in an older house - mostly with hardwood floors and area rugs - so perhaps dust is the culprit. Having said that, Bart never sneezes when he's sleeping, but I've been preparing a hot water bottle for him at night and for his naps. Perhaps the warmth helps?? If it were allergies, would he also sneeze while sleeping? Hercules Dad, I think your suggestion of a 2nd opinion is a good idea. I like our vet, but telling me it's a collapsed trachea without any sort of real examination or test, seemed like a quick judgement to me. We'll see. It's so heartbreaking - especially when they're so sweet and cute! Thanks. |
mine doesn't sneeze when she sleep..but she sleep under the covers most time...and snores big time. |
Definitly not collapsing trachea. Our Pete had that and he'd honk like and keep honking until you covered his nose and then it would stop> I bet allergies. |
thanks for info I'll start by getting an air purifier in our bedroom to see if that helps alleviate his sneezing. I'll also look into a specialist about the allergies and will post a follow-up on his progress. As an aside, I've never subscribed to a forum before and I can now see how it's helpful to share information - especially breed-specific info. I think many times you have to live with a particular breed to understand all their little quirks and medical issues. I know that's the case with my Lhasa and Shih Tzu too. Thanks again! |
Hi and welcome to both you and Bart!! I would definitely do as has already been suggested and get a second opinion. I don't mean to say that your vet doesn't know what their talking about but both allergies and symptoms of collaped trachea do not normally show up in a puupy. Neither of those conditions manifest until a dog is much older. I think it could be reverse sneezing which I think all puppies do from to time. |

My dog sneezes often once we brought her back home 3 days ago and also scratches one ear, i think its common for small dogs or maybe just yorkies, might not be a big problem but like someone said get 2nd opionon which i'll be doing this week if by today the dr says its nothing, if they say its nothing means its nothing and prob something in the surroundings |
