puppy dry skin my 18 week old yorkie has really dry skin at the back of his neck. looks like dandruff. any ideas what to do? I bathe him with oatmeal & baking soda shampoo per the breeder's instructions and made sure I rinsed him off really well and have given him 2 baths since I got him (I had to do it today since he jumped in my pond and looked like the rat from the black lagoon). |
What kind of food are you feeding him? |
You could try giving him Missing Link with his food. Its a supplement and it worked wonders on Timmy's dry coat. Its also great for their skin. |
You should also feed a food that doesn't have corn or wheat products. Most yorkies are allergic to corn and wheat. Any food on this list is an excellent food that doesn't contain corn or wheat. I would suggest switching foods and like the previous poster said, maybe adding Missing Link supplement to his food. |
dry skin thanks for your responses. I'll try the Missing Link product. I was originally feeding him the Little Cesars chicken products as that was what the breeder said to do. unfortunately, he really really didn't like it. I switched to Nutro Natural Choice puppy food in the pouches. He will eat it, but I really have to urge it on him and have to hand feed it (its pretty messy). Any suggestions on getting him to eat without me having to hand feed him still? I also leave him the Eucanuba puppy dry food, which looks like a waste of money since he dosn't like it either. |
Have you made a game out of feeding the dry? Gracie eats dry food best when I toss it to her one by one. She likes to play with them before crunching! I stir some dry in with the wet food, then add a few shreds of cheese. Gracie eats every bit of that. As for the coat, Gracie's dandruff disappeared after I started using Cowboy Magic and limiting the corn in her diet. |
dry skin Sounds like walking dandruff...a mite..have the vet give you a shampoo...18 week olds do not suffer from dry skin as a rule...good luck |
Here's a link to walking dandruff - it's called that because the mites are carrying the flakes so you can see them move. http://www.petplace.com/dogs/cheylet...ite/page1.aspx If they're not moving then I would think it is probably seborrhea - Virbac makes a shampoo called Sebolux that you can get from your vet. I know they do make human shampoos sold over the counter for this condition, but I've never tried them. You need to leave on the shampoo for 15 minutes for it to be effective. |

Layla had the same problem as a puppy... it was so bad... it didnt' bother her.. but i didn't like it... i talked to someone who said it was common in puppies and to see if it goes away.. and it has!!! around when she turned 6 months... hang in there... it will pass! |
I add a capsule of Fish Oil to Sydney's food per day. |
