Not sure if my Yorkie is pregnant? Hello. I am new to the Yorkie forum. Hello to all. :) I have been trying to find a forum for a while now and just happened to run across this one while trying to find information on pregnancies and yorkies. I think my little female may be pregnant... which worries me, because she is only ten and a half months old and weighs not quite four pounds. I am worried about her health, because of her size and age. This was definately an accident. I do have a male yorkie that I planned on breeding her to when she had her second or third cycle, but I had read that it was not healthy to breed the first time, so I'm very nervous. I did not see that she had gone into heat and then I went out of town and left them with my husband to care for and I believe that is when it may have happened. They are both healthy otherwise, AKC registered, beautiful lively dogs. I'm just very a very paranoid and worried yorkie mother. Can anyone give me some signs to watch for? I noticed two days ago that her nipples seemed to be a little pinker and more prominent and her stomache seemed just a tiny bit bigger. (she is a very tiny dog.) I am going to try to take her to the vet on my day off next week. Does anyone know how much an ultrasound or a repro check would cost normally? I'm a newlywed and on a tight budget, but I'm not about to not go at the same time, I just want to be prepared. Also, if she is pregnant, does anyone know what I should be feeding her? I have been feeding her Solid Gold Puppy up until now and had planned on switching her to Wysong or California Natural after a year. I have been trying to stick with the right amount of protein. I was advised against feeding a food with really high protein, as I was told it could lead to kidney problems over time in these small dogs. However, I thought if she is pregnant, I may be supposed to be feeding her more protein than I normally would? Is there Anything she should have more of or less of? Well, enough of the 20 questions. Thanks for your time. :) Bethany Dawn |
Well, firstly ALOT could go wrong if she IS pregnant..she is too young and also very small, right now at almost 11months old her body isnt ready to handle a pregnancy, she is still a puppy her self. You may have to expect the worst. When I was a child we had a small mutt who escaped when she came into heat for the first time and of course she came back pregnant. She had her pups 3 weeks early, they were all dead and she had to be spayed because she lost ALOT of blood:( I dont want to make you feel bad but I would put a little money aside just in case because if something should go wrong etc,the vet bills wont be cheap.I dont really know what else to tell you..I would get her looked at and see what your vet thinks about this..I know my vet would remove the pups because of the mothers age and size, but each vet is different. Hey,I could be wrong, your baby and her pups could be fine (if she IS pregnant),but its better to be safe than sorry. Also, she could just be having a flase pregnancy, one of my yorkies went through this and its also something that has to be treated. All I can recomend is that you go and see your vet as soon as possible and find out if she really is pregnant..if she is then he will tell you what to expect and how to care for your female.I hope everything turns out ok with your female. |
