Do I have to switch from Puppy food to Adult?
 
Hi Everyone

I've received so much valuable info from this site - a big thank you to you all.

My little Morkie, Lennie, just turned 1 year old. Lennie weighs 5 bls. and I feed him dry Merrick Puppy Food. Because he is only 5 lbs., I was thinking of keeping him on the Puppy food rather than switching to Adult food.

Do you think this would be okay??

You should defintely switch him to Adult food at some point - when you decide to is up to you and your vet recommendations (some switch as early as 8mths, some wait until 18mths).

This is what the Royal Canin website says about it:
"Small breed dogs reach adulthood at approximately 10 months of age. Puppy food is significantly higher in protein and fat, with dramatically different nutrient levels needed for growth and development. This combination makes it unsuitable for the nutritional requirements of an adult dog and likely to contribute to obesity."

A good "rule of thumb" is to switch to adult food when the puppy has attained 90% of its growth - I would say that based on this, your little guy is probably ready to make the switch - just make sure you do it gradually and mix them together!

Thanks, Janice! That's great information. I still have puppy food left but need to buy more, so adult food it will be! I will gradually move him over to the adult food! Thank goodness for Yorkie Talk.com

That was great advice. I usually switch mine when they are approaching their 1st Birthday.

My vet reccomended I switch Bruce at 10 months. I am not sure if this is a dog by dog thing, which it may be, but I would just ask the vet.

I feed Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul and it actually says on the bag that it is not just a puppy food, but an all life stages food. I also feed Canidae All Life Stages mixed with the Chicken Soup Puppy. Since the bag says I can continue to feed the Puppy formula even in adulthood, that is what I plan on doing. Plus, the kibbles in the puppy formula are so tiny and my 2 furballs really like that. AND, the puppy formula got 5 stars on the Dog Food Reviews Website and the adult formula only got 4 stars. That is all the more reason for me to stick with the Puppy.

So, you may want to check the bag for Merricks. It may be like Chicken Soup and actually be an All Life Stages food.

Yes, I say to switch to adult food also (slowly, by adding a little of the adult and then a little more over a two week period). Actually, they say you can switch smaller dogs over earlier because their growth is complete sooner than say a Great Dane.
