What R symptoms of liver shunt?? What are the symptoms of a liver shunt?? How is it diagnosed?? :confused: Hobbs is 1 year old and he drinks a lot of water sometimes. I know he drinks a lot more than Hootie does. In the mornings he doesn't really drink a lot, but when I'm home for lunch it seems like he drinks a lot then in the evenings he drinks a lot, too. It doesn't seem like he goes to the bathroom too terribly much...1 time in the morning, 1 time during my lunch break and usually 3 or 4 times in the evenings before bed. He does wake up in the middle of the night usually having to go potty. Should I be worried? |

Rebecca I don't know any of the symptons but I'll keep Hobbs in my thoughts. He's such a little darling. I'm sure everything is ok. |

I may just be paranoid, like usual. :rolleyes: I looked on the Internet and here are the symptoms: poor weight gain, sensitivity to sedatives (especially diazepam), depression, head pressing (pushing the head against a solid object), seizures, weakness, salivation, vomiting, poor appetite, increased drinking and urinating, balance problems and frequent urinary tract disease or early onset of bladder stones. Hobbs only has one of those, being increased drinking and urinating. Maybe he just likes water?? His yearly checkup is a little while away, but when I take him in, I will definately discuss it with his vet. I'm just wondering if I need to take him in sooner?? :confused: |
Can you catch some of his urine in a sterile cup and take it in to get it checked?:) I used to catch Muffin's, but it might not be so easy with him.;) |
How old is your dog? I am just wondering because I have 4 1/2 month old puppy, Sam who loves to drink water, in fact he likes to sleep next to his water bowl. One day I had to lift his head out of the water bowl beause he fell asleep with his chin on the edge of the bowl and his nose was a hair from being in the water. Sam does not have any of the other symptoms described in your prior post - maybe its a puppy thing?? |

Polydipsia/Polyuria are just symptoms of many things, just like your dog doesn't have parvo just because he has diarrhea. I would measure his intake of water, if it is a lot more than 30 ml (about an ounce) per pound per day then I would seek a vet's opinion. Diabetes, kidney and liver problems, pituary disorders like Addisons and Cushings are just a few of the ones that list polydipsia and polyuria in their list of symptoms. |

I was doing some reading and came across this on Dr. Karen Tobias' website for The University of Tennessee. The link is the website that I am reading & then I also put in what I just read. http://www.livershunt.com/ ~ Urinary Tract: As the liver fails to detoxify ammonia and uric acid — the byproducts of protein digestion — the substances must be excreted in the urine. The abnormally high concentration of ammonia encour*ages formation of mineral salts, which can crystalize into rough*~ surfaced calculi, or stones. These calculi obstruct and irritate the kidneys, bladder or urethra, making urination painful and difficult, sometimes resulting in blood in the urine. Some dogs develop recurrent urinary tract infections, as Ellie did. Dogs with PSS tend to drink large amounts of water and urinate a lot. |
Have him do a routine CBC (complete blood count) on Hobbs when you have your checkup done if he is not symptomatic at this time, you can likely wait a few weeks with no problem, he could have several different issues, or as you said, he could just be really thirsty.. this bloodwork will let you and your vet know from what the certain levels are whether further testing needs to be done. I've really been monitoring his water intake and some days he drinks a lot, I think more than the recommended amount, and other days he doesn't. :confused: |
