Help! does anyone's yorkie have alergies?
 

My baby scratches all the time. I took her to the vet on Wednesday last week and she said she is too young for allergies but what ever it is, is coming from the inside out. She doesn't have a rash or dry skin. She gave me benedryl but Bella had the adverse reaction to it. She recommended Travist or Dayhist. Does anyone else have this problem? I am scarred to give her anything because of the reaction to the benedryl.

I Took Chloe To The Vet About A Month Ago. Told The Vet I Think She Has Alergies And She She Bites Her Front Paws At Times. So He Also Gave Her Benadryl, She Takes The Childrens Half Of A Tablet. He Said That Some Dogs Get It And To Check Her Food. She Could Have A Reaction To The Food I'm Feeding Her. She Was Eating Pedigree, But Now On Royal Canin For Yorkies. Seem To Be Doing Better. I Haven't Gave Her The Benadryl Since To See If That Was The Problem. Check The Foods And What You Bath Your Little One With. One Thing At A Time So You Know What Was Causing The Alergies. Hope This Helps.

Can't believe what I found out today! I had to call the vet over the weekend to see if it was okay to give Kodah children's benadryl. For about three or four days she has been scratching so bad that she has even been crying! :(
I, too, thought it might be her food after doing a search & finding that some Yorkies have had itchiness being on Royal Canin (but I had started last week switching her to Innova EVO) or maybe her shampoo (Bless The Beasts puppy shampoo) but the vet said this is highly unusual for a puppy to be scratching that bad. He did a skin scrape test & found that she has a type of mite that she brought home from the breeder (not contagious to humans or other animals) - said it has something to do with their underdeveloped immune system & sees this kind in very small puppies or elderly dogs. I could not believe it!!! but thankful we were able to get a diagnosis. She is just miserable, but treatment starts tomorrow & he said she should be feeling alot better by Thursday!! He did tell me that I could give her 1/2 mil. of benadryl every 8 hours. I tend to be a "clean freak" always cleaning her bed & blankets every day as well as cleaning food dishes & vacumming EVERY day! -but just hearing the word MITES makes me crazy. He assured me that I could be the cleanest person in the world & she brought home just enough from her breeder's place that it has taken these few weeks to develop into this stage - another good thing is that there is no hair loss at this point - but I can hardly stand to see her itch like she does :( !

also meant to mention that Kodah did not have dry skin or rash on her skin either - that's what was driving us crazy!

Sabrina is allergic to CHICKEN. If it's in any food - chicken parts, etc. - she chews her feet and gets a funny rusty rash on her tummy. I give her benedryl when someone makes a mistake and gives her a "treat" (my grandbabies think sharing food with her is fun). My vet said to watch yorkies for chicken and wheat and corn, but I don't think she has a problem with wheat and corn. His Yorkie would go into shock when it got ahold of chicken.

Sometimes chewing their paws means nail cutting time too - I have to remind myself to check that.

So sorry to hear about Kodah. My yorkie Eddie was diagnosed with Demodex mange (mites) a few weeks after I got him. Unfortunately he did loose a lot of hair. He just finished up his last treatment this week! :) What type of treatment will they be using for Kodah? Eddie sends puppy kisses for a fast recovery. :animal-sm

My dog has bitten her feet all her life to the point where she could not walk. I have tried every thing - and I mean every thing I wont bore you with the history but unfortunately it came down to steroids. Which of course stop the itch but kill the dog. I found Web site (or should I say another web site)which said they could guarantee their product worked and was all natural and safe if the dog licked the cream. So I sent for it - epecting it not to work like the rest of the stuf Ive bought.
In short Sally has not bitten her feet since I started using it she is off steroid and off anti histamine (we found neo claritin gave her some relief) and I only use the cream onece a day now. Alex has had allergies for years now. The vet the other day order a little bit of a shake up for him. She wanted a fish and potato diet (put him on Wellness...they seemed to have the best ingredient list and the fish was caught and not farm raised), gave a new shampoo (I have been bathing him every two days for the last couple of months) and said to change the benedryl to something else ( can't remeber off the top of my head). He loves his new food and I just used the shampoo yesterday. I hope it works...
