When to switch to adult food? My two yorkies are 13 months and 7 months. I had always planned on keeping them both on puppy food until Maddie turned 1 year, Wesley would be 18 months by then. But when I was talking to a lady at the pet store, she said that Wesley should be on adult food now and it would be okay if Maddie was too. I'm just worried about Maddie missing some of the nutrients that she especially needs as a puppy if she is on adult food. Feeding them different foods isn't really an option because I know that they would both insist on eating exactly opposite of what I intend for them. Is it bad for Wesley to be on puppy food when he is over 1 year old? What are your thoughts on this? When did you switch to adult food? What do people with more than one dog do? Any advice is appreciated. :D |
My Vet said you could switch them to the adult food at twelve months and since they are small dogs they can stay on it even longer than that. I think it is fine for him to have puppy food. I switched mine at 14 months but there is only a two month difference in age in mine. Theres more calories in puppy food but I think as long as he doesnt have a weight problem you are fine |
Wesley doesn't have a weight problem. He gets a lot of exercise too so I'm not really worried about the extra calories. Thanks for the advice. I'm really leaning toward keeping them both on the puppy food. |

I went throught the same thing with Shylah and Starsky. Starsy is 21 months and Shylah is 7months. My vet said as long as you have them on a good food, they both can eat it. I have my guys on Nutra Natural small bites and I also supplement Shylah with Yogurt treats for extra calcium. The vet said that would be fine. |
Maybe you can give both of them half and half, puppy and adult food. This way they're both getting what they need and I can't see that puppy food can hurt the big one. Judy |
i would consult a vet. |
puppy food or adult food & how much hi, maybe someone can answer this one. my little guy is 15 months now and i have him for about 1 1/2 weeks. the breeder said he is still on puppy food, and she does not knwo how much he was eating. there are 15 dogs from where he came from, so i guess it was difficult to keep track of what everyone ate. he is 6 lbs, the vet said he is ideal weight. but how much do i feed him. he eats merrick dry and merrick canned. it is very good high quality food. how often do you feed a yorkie. i find if i feed him in the morning and then go out, he poops in the house. can i feed him at the end of the day when i get home? this only happens when i go out only about twice a week. i just do not want to starve him. thanks ahead of time for all the time you took to answer all my questions, i really appreciate it. elle57 |

Why don't ypu put them both on Canidae ALL Life Stage Formula ? It's an excellent food and you can keep them on it for ever. |
I really don't think it would matter if you held off on the puppy food or rushed the adult food at this point. I, personally, would delay the adult food since I have done this many times with no known problems, but have always waited until at least a year to switch to the adult formula. I also like the idea of mixing the two so when it is time to make the switch you can just eliminate the puppy kibble when you run out. |
