yorkies eating cat food my mom went to the store and bought canned wellness cat food instead of dog food! she didn't even notice. she's been feeding her 2 yorkies cat food. is this ok? is it dangerous to their health? http://www.omhpet.com/cats/wellness_...e=canCatTurkey |
O wow! It's not "okay" in the long run b/c cats have different health needs than dogs do. But I don't think it will severely harm them if it were fed a few times (but, how long are we talking about?) What I do know is that I'm surprised they didn't vomit! Baby and Zoie ate some of my sister's cat's food, and they both vomited. |

Eating cat food short term isnt ging to hurt them. Its eating it long term that hurts them it is higher in protein than dog food |
I might be wrong, but I thought I read on here that cat food is higher in fat than dog food, and as such can cause pancreatitis? |
I wanted to buy cat treats at my vet because they were smaller and was told never to give cat food or treats to Piccolo - too much protein. |

I contacted the vet at the Purina Animal Food Company - and he said that dogs certainly CAN eat cat food. My two previous dogs ate cat food for more than 10 years and were never sick - and they were very healthy..... (mainly Meow Mix with the usual table scrabs and treats that most of us feed our dogs) There are a couple things to keep in mind though -- Cat food is richer than dog food - so any dog that has a weight problem should not be eating a lot of cat food. It is more fattening than dog food. The vet did also said - cats should not live on dog food. There are things in cat food that they need - and these things are not found in dog food. *** So - there is certainly no reason why your dog(s) can't have cat food - and especially occasionally. My Vet told me cat food has too much protien in it. My dogs were eating my cat food and he said to put it up out of their reach |
My vet also said the same thing...to high in protein.....he suggested taking the cat food up off the floor and out of reach of our Lily and Sabastian. I don't thing that a couple of days being on the cat food would nessesarily hurt them, just not good for them! |
Diesel got into the catfood one time. Later on he threw every bit of it up and had the runs for a while after that. |
now they are eating chicken soup canned. FOR DOGS. lol.. http://www.chickensoupforthepetlover...s/canned_food/ |

Some dogs react differently to cat food; some throw it right up, and others it never affects them. I wouldn't make cat food a steady diet for the dogs because like others have said it is way to high in protein for them. Cat food isn't going to harm the dog severely in any way; it just might make their tummy a little upset. ;) Just make sure your mom wears her glasses next time! |
