my new yorkie has a darkish pee-why? hi everyone, thanks for all your help with my last question. now i have a new one to ask. i just got this yorkie 5 days ago. he seems perfectly fine in everything. he is 14 months old. when he pees his pee seems a little dark in color, is this normal. yes, he is drinking water, it is down at all times and he drinks. also i noticed, when he is peeing, it comes out, then it shoots out in spurts. i never had a male dog, so i do not know if this is normal. the vet told me he was healthy, and he seems healthy. am i acting overly cautious? thanks again for all your help |
No worries... I think he's fine - both my dogs have quite yellow urine - if it was clear, then I would wonder... Maybe you're thinking of the rule of thumb for people? That if your urine isn't clear you're dehydrated and need to drink more water? I don't believe it works that way for dogs - someone correct me if I'm wrong here... Yellow pee is normal - if it's DARK DARK (like almost a brownish or reddish tinge to it) then I would be taking a sample into the vet. As far as the 'spurting' at the end of the pee, this is normal too - my boy does it and often 'dribbles' as he's walking away from it too, which is just lovely, lol. :) |
for what it's worth...When I got Mo about 1 1/2 months ago I thought the same thing about him. He was not neutered at the time. Anyway, he checked out and is fine. |
what are the male yorkies signs of maturity hi, thanks for the info, i just spoke to the breeder and she told me the little bit of yellowish discharge could be from him coming into maturity. do you think this is true? i put a belly band on him, with a kotex pad and some spots of are on the pad and they are not urine. does anyone know the what the signs of maturity are of a male yorkie? he is 14 months and i have to get him neutered very soon. thanks again to everyone who has been so helpful. |
have you changed his diet or started vitamins? i always look at romeos pee pee and never saw anything like this. he's 3 yrs old now. i would roll him over and feel his belly looking for discomfort. also, i read that city water can be very hard on their little organs. maybe try filtered water. |
yorkie urine hi, i have been putting a new food with his old food that the breeder gave me. she was feeding him purina pro plan and i am feeding him merrick dry food for puppies and merrick puppy plate canned food.he absolutely loves it. i only give him filtered water, never tap water. does it make any sense that he could be coming into maturity with the yellowish discharge? thats what the breeder just told me tonight. |
yorkie vet the breeder also told me that the vet should have told me he needed a urine and stool sample asap, the day i brought him in to be checked out. i only had a couple of days to get him checked out. |

I don't think dark urine is normal at all and could be a symptom of liver disease, bladder infection or prostate problem. I would definitely get a urine sample and take it to the vet with you for a checkup. From the web: If your dog's urine is darker than usual, it could be an indication of blood in the urine. It's especially a concern if it's associated with a high temperature in the dog. A dog that squirts or dribbles his urine could have a bladder problem, or in males - a prostate problem. |
