I need positive thoughts today! PLEASE tell me someone out there has potty trained Yorkies! Seriously I am so annoyed today because my Yorkies are just not being consistent and it is driving me nuts. :( :( Do not get me wrong but for the first time today I actually thought this may not work. If they do not eventually learn to potty outside I do not know what I am going to do but I for surely know I will not live cleaning up after them forever. I feel like I am doing everything I can but it just is not working sometimes. |
are you training inside or outside??? |
How old are they? Are they in a crate? |
I am training outside and yes they are in a crate while I am not home. They do sleep with me at night and do well through the night. I just feel like some days they ROCK and than other days they forget everything totally. Like this week they have just not done anything right - I just do not get it. They KNOW what is right and wrong - UGH!!!! |
Do you have boys or girls? How old are they? |

I have one boy who is 10 months old and one girl who is 9 months old. |
Yes, there are 100% housebroken yorkies out there. Mine is and there are others on here who also have housebroken yorkies. I can tell you that when it came to potty training, for me it was the ONLY priority I had! I was unrelenting in my watchfulness of Millie until she was housebroken. In other words, I never let her out of my site, EVER! And it took over 3 months of this non-stop vigilance before I was comfortable letting her have free range of the home (except for a few rooms). There were a couple of things going for me. 1. Millie from day one did not mess in her crate. 2. Once we established her x-pen as an extension of her crate, she did not mess in it either 3. I had easy access to the outside and a small fenced in area for her to potty in. (So if I had to take her out every hour on the hour or be out there for 20-30 mins until she went, that was ok) 4. Eventually I got a doggie door (after she was fully house broken) and that has really been beneficial; and 5. I only had one puppy to worry with not two. I work all day and Millie was able to hold her potty until we got home. she was somewhere between 12-14 wks old. We kept her in her crate when we were not there. Even though I wanted to relax when I got home and every day for 3 months I was not able to and after wondering if I had made a mistake in getting Millie, she finally got house broken. Let me tell you: Those were the worst days of my life, but oh so worth it now! Now I am able to enjoy Millie and make other things priority and not have to worry about cleaning up messes every day for the rest of her life. So it is possible and well worth the effort. So just continue to be consistent and maintain a "doggy bootcamp" mentality, it will eventually click with them. |
Great post Ladylavender! I was very lucky with Sophie I got her when she was nine weeks old and she was potty trained in two weeks. I was the same as Ladylavender I never let her out of my sight and if I thought it was time to go potty we stayed untill she did and then gave lots of praise. She is almost two now and she still likes to be praised. Don't give up it can be done. Just be very watchful and if you think they should need to go usually they do wait it out they will eventually go. Sophie is a bigger yorkie and I have heard they are easier to train because they can hold it longer. So maybe make their potty times more frequent. Good luck. |
I got Codie (my Maltese) when he was 12 weeks old. Two weeks after that he was fully potty trained but I take no credit for it -- he was VERY smart and caught on immediately! Tia (my Yorkie) took a little longer to potty train. I got her when she was 4 months old. She was fully potty trained by 6 months. She basically learned from Codie. But my Yorkie who passed away, Katie (RIP little angel), was hard to potty train. It looks A LOT of consistency and effort on my part to train her. Your Yorkies are definitely trainable -- sometimes it just takes longer then we expect. Good luck. |
Thanks Ladylavendar that really was a good post and it makes me feel like I am on the right track but it is just frustrating sometimes. I do sometimes let them out of my site so that is something I have to work on. Plus my hubby is not as dedicated as I am but the first to complain they are still messing in the house. UGH!! I will try to think "DOGGIE BOOTCAMP" thats good advice! |
i can feel your pain.. the moment i brag on oscar and say that he is potty trained... he has the worst day of accidents! phil is horrible about carrying the load with me... we live waaay out in the boonies so its scary at night! i have to beg him to take oscar our for me at night. but as soon as he messes up... hes mad at me lol i know how u feel. but just hang in there... be a hawk!!!! as soon as they sniff go outside and wait wait wait!... treats also are the key... oscar really picked up when we started using treats. |
Don't get discouraged! You'll get there, don't worry. I working on it, too. When you see that they are having one of those days, supervise them at all times and make sure you show your dissapointment when they don't go where they are supposed too and take them to the right place. Everytime they go where they shouldn't without being caught they are being detrained a bit, so try to avoid that. |
Hang in there. I didn't think Daisy would ever be potty trained but she was a little over one year old before it really clicked with her. Now she NEVER has an accident. Every time she would potty or poop outside I would praise her big time and she would get a treat when she came inside. Now she tells me she has to go out by staring at me until I catch on. If she really has to go and I don't notice her right away she will do an urgent little yip and run to the door. Now she runs out, does her business and runs in all excited for her treat. I still make a fuss over her when she potties or poops outside I guess so she will never forget that she is doing the right thing going outside. There were times when I thought I would never see the day, but I am so glad she is doing so good now. Like I said, hang in there, it may take some time, but I hope not as long as mine. |

I had to actually start taking Ativan because i was having panic attacks because I felt soooo out of control. One of the things that helped me was I crated him every second I could not watch him and I am letting him out very often, he is getting better and now I cannot imagine my anxiety about having him. I also put him on a schedule that I follow pretty regularly for crating and feeding etc and that helped too. I got it from this site: http://www.darnfar.com/Dog%20Trainin...ng_a_puppy.htm Let me know if that helps, Patty |
Thanks guys - I guess I was just having one of those days but I know it will happen I just have t be patient. Thanks again - you guys always know what to say to make me feel so much better! |

Funny because I was just thinking of a schedule kind of thing. This is a great site!  |
romeo is pretty good. he does have accidents.:( |
This may not work for you - but I have a doggie door - out to a very secure, locked and gated back yard. I know most of you would not or could not let your babies go out unattended, but I can. It really helped me a lot. Rowdy had lots of accidents until he could go in and out the doggie door by himself. Rexy basically followed Rowdy's lead and had very few accidents in the house, except that they both like to "go" (mostly poop) on the carpet in my mom's room. The rest of the house is wood floors so I say that they think her carpet is grass :D (no, it's not green, but feels kinda like grass, don't ya think!:p ) Rowdy does mark occasionally, but he is not neutered so that is expected. Anyway, the doggie door saved my life!!! |
LOL...i knew it. As soon as I said he was doing good...lol. Oliver pee'd 3 times on the carpet today...Arrggghh. |
I feel your pain!! Hi there. God bless you!! I have been having the same problem and have just joined today so that I could get some info and support about this very topic! My situation is almost identical to yours. i have a 9 month old female who is still very inconsistent. She only weighs 3 pounds and I guess that adds to the difficulty. It sucks becuase I am afraid to take her to other people's homes. She sleeps with us as well, and is crated during the day. I think the advice about watching them every minute is vital and also REALLY challenging. I am the only person who has to go out in the rain or at night. But I sure hear about it when there is an accident!! I don't know where you are posting from, but i am in Toronto and dreading the winter cuz I don't know how I will get her to go out at all!!! Have you heard of anyone litter training Yorkies? Good luck and thanks for your post, :) :) |
I thought the same thing. Chewie is going to be one this month and still had accidents. But when I realized that it was "me" being trained to take him out on a regular basis and not get lazy about it, he started doing good again. They want to please and it just takes persistance on our part. My dogs are crate trained, too. Just keep up the good work and be positive about doing a good thing. Another idea, Chewie liked to poop on the rugs , so I put a rug outside the doggie door and he started to poop on it everyday. |

I dunno if you were talking to me or not...lol. I live in NY. I am afraid to take Oliver to other homes too. Strangely, he is "usually" pretty good if he is on the couch with someone. So, he is on the couch with us a lot of the time while he is out of the crate but now he is getting "brave" and jumping off the couch....lol....even though I tell him to stay..(I gotta start training for him) Are you referring to your hubbie with taking him out in the rain, lol. Mine, once he is in his pajamas refuses to take him out cause he doesn't want the neighbors to see him...me on the other hand, I just take him out in my pj's anytime...lol. the winter is gonna be the worst..here in NY too. The only good thing is that he doesn't seem to dawdle as much in rain ...soo far...... |
I am in Florida so cold weather is not an issue - just rain and EXTREME heat. I agree though the watching him all the time has proven to be VERY hard. It is so easy to get distracted and than bam it has happened. Oh well I will just keep my efforts up - hopefully it will just click one day! |
I like the regimented scedule! I know it is almost impossible to watch them 100% of the time. What would be a good regimented schedule for a 4 month old instead of 8 weeks? |

Sorry, about the double post! Does anyone else feed their pup in their crate? I always feed Sophie in her ex-pen. |

My Oliver is about 4 months now and I keep him crated from 11pm until as long as he sleeps, he will usually start scratching or whining, we keep him in our bedroom (sometimes at 530am or 730am) If I get up to pee at night, I take him out QUICK for a potty and put him right back in and then he's quiet till 9'ish AM if I do that. I let him out when he gets up 1st thing, then feed him, then play with him for a bit. It really depends on your schedule, I guess. I am working from home now so I am more flexible. Sometimes I crate him for an hour or two in the AM while I work. He usually goes back in his crate after lunch and he goes to the bathroom, around 1pm till 5pm while I work at home and he is generally pretty quiet. After I finish working at 5 or so, I watch him vigilantly and take him out every hour or so. Then back in the crate while I make supper and stuff for like an hour. Then outside to pee (every time I take him out of the crate I take him outside) and then we feed him at around 8pm and keep him out of his crate playing, then out every hour and then back in the crate by 10 or 11pm. I like the feeding schedule cause now I get to know his bowel schedule pretty well. Oh, and we also take his water dish after around 900pm or so. I mean, if he keeps going back to it like he is thirsty I give him a little. But it helps him through the night I think, not to wake up having to pee. It is so funny, tonight my husband changed into his pajamas(once my hubby changes he doesn't take him out - doesn't like going out in his pj's - so it becomes my job but I am usually in bed early, lol), and Oliver walked right into his crate and laid down all by himself...lol. Like he knew, "well he is wearing pajamas, I won't be going out again tonight" Like he knew it was time for bed. LOL .... he is so sweet! Sorry that was so long! Patty |
Does anyone know how long it takes (how old?) before the ears prick up? I mean without taping them or anything. Thx, Patty |
