Gross question but I need an opinion.
 

Okay I know this is gross but I am a little concerned. Mia is my little girl Yorkie who is 8 months old and 3 pounds. She seems to be extremely healthy but every now and than when she goes poop she has what I would describe as mucusy poop. Like I said it is only every now and than that this happens but when it does it looks like it is very mucus like. Has anyone else had this happen with their Yorkies? I am wondering why this is and if I need to be concerned?

Hello...I am new to YT..I have a 4 month old yorkie male named Chopper...I have the same problem with him and I asked the vet about it and he told me it was nothing to worry about that some times they get conctepated and that the mucus is from straining to poop....he told me to give him a half teaspoon of pepto-bismol..and he hasn't had the discharge since...hope it helps

:aimeeyork My Pheobe did it one time and she is in very good health, i will recommend to call the vet and if he need to see her, make a appt.God bless:littleang

Have you had the anal glands expressed (by vet or groomer?) If not try that otherwise go to the vet. It could be giardia or a parasite or nothing but it's worth a $26 fecal to be sure.

know i remember that the time that Pheobe had the mucusy poop was because she was eating the can cat food, only that time because i keep their food separate from each other; and she never had worm before and know (that is what the vet said) but i agree with erin to ck with your vet.

Just a update - I called the vet and they said if it continues to bring in a sample so they can test. So far it has not happened again so I am just going to keep my eyes out for it again. Thanks for all the advice!

I had the same thing happen with Timmy and he had collitis. He was on meds for 10 days and then he was fine.

I was just thinking about little Mia this morning and wondering if you ever took her to the vet. Now that I think about it, my vet also told me that mucusy poop can be caused by straining. If she is not having it everyday, I think it is definately from the straining and nothing serious. Hope Mia and little Murphy are doing well today!

Have you broken down and given them a bath yet?! :p

Yup last night - ugh - I just had to it was bugging me so much! :rolleyes:

Always a good idea to get blood work to rule out pancreatitis. My dog had it several times. This can be triggered by table food. I know its so hard to resist those cute faces wanting something good to eat. Does she have a temperature? Does the mucus have any blood specks in it? Sometimes just resting th GI tract with water and bland food for the day can help resolve GI upset from our experience.

the same thing happened with cash then we had a fecal sample analyzed and it turned out he had giardia and coccidia... he was on meds for 10 days and it cleared it up...look into the stool sample analysis just to be safe.
