too skinny? how can you tell if your yorkie is too skinny? i can feel his ribs, and a couple people have said "he's so skinny." he gets his daily amount of food (nutro chicken and rice) plus treats. is there any way to tell by feeling their ribs if they're too skinny? |
Great question!! My mom is always saying Darla is too skinny too...and she is a great eater..so I cant wait to hear responses to this thread. Dawn |
You are supposed to be able to feel their ribs. If you can't, they're fat. Not sure how to tell if they're too skinny, though. |
I definelty know that Darla isnt too skinny and it irritates me when my mom keeps saying it....she should watch her eat and sneak Reece's food too lol Dawn |
Very good question....my Mia is a small Yorkie - 3 pounds! She is SOOOOO skinny but eats like a piggy. I can feel her ribs and her little hip bones. I have been feeding her chicken soup kibble in the AM and just put her on some wet at night to try to add some meat to her bones. Any other suggestions would be great. Plus she gets tons of treats too! I always wonder as well if she was too skinny or just built that way? |
i wish, wish , wish i could feel lexi's ribs, dont think she has any..HA |
Its okay if you can feel their ribs that is normal. If you can see their ribs they are to skinny |
You should be able to feel their ribs by a normal pressure of your hand, one way to tell if they might be too thin is to feel all the way down their spine and feel if their hip bones are prominent, if they are then they may need a little weight. Not sure if I explained where to feel very well - do you understand where I am talking about? |
I seen the chart at my vet and online. You should easily be able to feel their ribs. I fee like Sissy is under weight, when I took her to the vet she graded her body weight between a 4-5, I think she has gained a few ounces since I first got her though. |
too skinny i have the same problem with my dog.. he doesnt like to eat :( |
If you can see each individual rib poking out, then they are too skinny. You are SUPPOSED to be able to feel their ribs. If you can't feel their ribs, they are too fat. My Hobbs is skinny....I can feel his ribs....but he isn't TOO skinny. I can't SEE any of his ribs. But people tell me all the time how skinny he is. As long as he is eating well, I don't worry about it. |

1 Attachment(s) thank you everyone for the advice. after hearing your responses i really don't think henry is underweight. i can definitely not SEE his ribs. thanks! by the way here's a picture of my little snugglebug. |
my vet says well, what everyone else has said, you're supposed to be able to feel his ribs but she also said that when you feel it, you should be able to feel like a thin layer of fat kinda like when you pinch his skin (lightly) you should feel a thin spongy layer and not just a flap of skin. as long as the ribs are not sticking out when you pick him up from his front legs and hold him in sideways/ profile position. |
