Is Nutri-Cal Neccessary?
 

Okay I have heard alot of you talking about this and it seems the smaller Yorkies need it more. Sebastian is 3 months and weighs a little over 2 lbs. should I be giving him this? He eats great, potties fine, and doesn't ever seem lethargic. The only time he shakes is when we pick him up but I think he is afraid of heights. (I would be too at his size)

I have only given it to Tia once. I keep it on hand for emergencies - but she is not as small as some - 3.5 lb.

I don't know if I would say it is necessary but I like to have it in case of an emergency. They can crash very quickly. Gus (five pounds) usually eats like a champ but a couple of days ago he wasn't feeling well and that's all he would take. I also give it to him before anything stressful like the vet.

I agree....I don't think it is "necessary" but I would have it around 'just in case'.....2 pounds is still kinda small and my favorite saying is..."I'd rather have it and NEVER need it than be sitting in the living room floor @ 2 am and wishing I had some......."

I've had it around but I have yet to use it. As recommended by our breeder, we put a pinch of sugar in his water bowl and he's been completely fine and absolutely healthy!

It really helps. We have had some hypoglyceimc problems and I feel better when chloe eats some nutrical. And she loves the stuff. Its like a treat for her! It also stimulates hunger which is good for small yorkie pups to keep up their bloodsugar. Hypoglycemic shock are horrible. Dont let it happen. Very scary! if your dog does not eat every 3-4 hours make them eat nutrical.

Im in europe and we cant get nutrical so I would say that it isnt really necesary.I got Lady at 7 weeks old and Jess at 8 weeks old and I just kept their blood sugar level up by giving them a little sugared water through a seringe a couple of times a day,I also made sure they ate regularly even if that meant hand feeding them.
I never had a problem with hypoglycemia (thank god).

I don't have any Nutracal and have never used it. I don't put any sugar in Stewie's bowl, either. Should I be doing one of these things? He eats when he's hungry... usually three times a day. I free feed him.

This may sound naive...but what is Nutra-Cal? What is the purpose of this product? Do I need it for my Yorkie, considering my Yorkie is almost 11 months old and is a healthy 7 lbs?

Nutrical is a nutrient supplement that has sugar in it. If your dog eats well and has never had any hypoglycemia problems I wouldn't worry about giving it. I have a 12 week old puppy thats only a pound and a half and I don't give it to her because she is a good eater and healthy with no hypoglycemia problems.

On the day that we picked up Toby, everything seemed fine. He was good in the car and played with the kids when we returned home. During the afternoon and evening he ate a few kibbles but not much. We crated him for the night. I was amazed that he didn't cry at all being his first night. In the morning I had to wake him up. He was lethargic, weak, and couldn't walk well. I had to phone the emergency vet and brought him to the hospital. When i brought him in the vet said he didn't know yet what was wrong with Toby, however, he was a very sick dog and may not make it. Two weeks prior to this we lost our first yorkie, Pebbles. This could not be happening. The vet phoned later in the afternoon and told me that Toby's blood sugar had dropped to nothing and he started to give him nutrical. We picked him up later that evening and what a difference in him. He was his lively self. I had no idea that this was something to watch out for as this was my second yorkie. I had never heard of hypoglamic shock. I wish I had known. it would have saved us a lot of heartache not to mention the hugh vet bill for after hours. The vet told me to at least always have on hand corn syrup in case it every happens again. It never has, thank god, but you should definitely be aware and prepared for this type of episode. :aimeeyork

Nutracal is the best stuff to have on hand. I give it to mine when they go to the vet. I have had my tiny ones need it around the time they stop getting mommy so much. It has saved alot of my babies. I use it for all kinds of reasons.Tell all my people to have it on hand. stress is hard on them when they go to there new homes.and things like that. I wont be without mine

That's a great idea to give it to them before a trip to the vet. I neve thought of that but they are certainly STRESSED there and, if they have to stay for any length of time, that would be a great preventative measure!

Also, Nutrical or Nutristat have lots of vitamins and nutrients in it. I give it to my dogs sometimes as a treat. Can't hurt! Just like people taking extra vitamins.

call me werid i gave it 2 tyesha twice a day, the pup place told me to and she loved the stuff. she'll grawl if it falls on the floor and i try to clean up the stick mess. that stuff stinks tho. :aimeeyork

I keep Nutristat in the refrigerator. I squeeze out an inch and rake it behind Maggie front top teeth. If I wait for her to lick it off my finger, it has already become stringy and all over her face and neck hair.
