Is canned food bad? Hello everyone. Lately, I've been having a little bit of a hard time feeding nemo his dry food. We were feeding him Merricks puppy mix which he ate find (we usually applied hot water to moisten it up). Usually in the weekends we would mix in some Wellness canned food. He loves canned food but I've heard that going canned food is bad for their teeth. After going through the merricks we made him a little buffet to find out what other try food he liked. We tried merricks, innova, puppy lovers, california and he ended up eating the innova. Biggest problem is he never eats it dry at all and we decided to try mixing 1/4 wet into his dry food. This seems to work...he will go crazy every single time and eat the entire plate. How many people do this and will there be any problems with his teeth by doing this? My baby's gotta eat you know. The hard is ideal for ther teeth. My dgs are picky eaters and I give them 1/2 a tin each of lil Caesar in the Morning and I leave the hard out for them. They do eat the hard though so I know they are getting that plus hard treats for snacks |
There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeding canned food - ESPECIALLY if the alternative means not eating anythign at all! It's perfectly fine to feed a mixture of kibble and canned food. Kibble helps to keep their teeth clean and strong - if you were to feed strictly a diet of soft food, their teeth wouldn't be getting the workout that they needed which can result in the loss of teeth at an early age. If you are able to get your puppy to eat the kibble when it is mixed with a little canned food and some water, then continue to do that - eventually you may be able to wean him off the canned and go back to just dry food. |
I shy away from the soft food because it tends to make Lillies stools softer. I do give her 2x a week boiled chicken, whole grain rice and 1tsp of organic babyfood veggies. I mix that all together in my magic bullet and she just loves it. But they really need that hard kibble for there teeth. |
The moist food is just a treat for mine everyday. They only get 1/2 tin each and the tins are small so its just a little bit of moist. The hard food is their staple. If you feed them too much moist they wont eat the hard at all and that is bad for their teeth |
I have given up on the food fight. I just won't play that game any more. I feed a super premium dry food Canidae (I have tried others, long list) but keep coming back tothe Canidae. To encourage the kids to eat I add to the dry kibble a tablespoon or LESS or so of a high quality canned food. I always squish the canned food up with my fingers so that my dogs have my scent on their food and are reminded what a good pack leader I am.:D That idea is straight from my Cesar's Way book! |
When Gucci was able to eat regular dog food I would mix in wet with her kibbles, only way she ate. Try this I would give her the dry food as a treat and play games and throw it and she would run and eat it. You need lots of patience with them, but hey if they are eating thats all that matters. Give her a milk bone or two a day that would help their teeth stay strong. Gina |
Sadie (2 1/2 yrs old) has always been a picky eater. I have her on Innova right now. I was boiling chicken breast and putting a few pieces in with her kibbles. Most of the time she would only eat the chicken...sometimes she would eat everything.I bought some nutro adult (wet) dog food and add just enough to coat the kibbles....she loves it! and eats every bit of it. Now we have another furbaby...Lillie, she is 11 weeks old and was eating kibbles moistened...well...kinda like mushy. Anyway, she got ahold of dry kibble and now won't eat them moist so.....I bought some nutro ultra puppy (wet) (she was having a difficult time going poop) and mash 2 little chunks of it onto her kibbles...she eats all of it. She only gets enough of the wet to coat the dry kibbles...I don't think this is a bad thing as she is still getting the crunching |
You should try Royal Canin. They make a food just for Yorshire Terriers. You can get it at Pet Smart. My Winston loves it some times I put chicken in it. They make this food so it is small but the shape is made to clean ther teeth. There is a lot of good things about this food. It is worth a try. Brenda and Winston |

My baby wouldn't eat her food unless there's canned food mixed in it. I try to cut down the protion of the canned food gradually. I also use Royal Canin dried food; she seems to like it. Question: What is the best qualitied canned food you would recommand? What flavor yorkies seem to like the most? Also, my baby has bad breath, do you think it's because of the canned food? Or because she's teething? (she's almost 7 months old) Thanks~ :) |
my girls cant keep enough weight on only dry so I feed canned in the morning I have been giving them natural choice for sensitive tummys and the dry throughout the day they like the variety |
