he hates his food..help! HATE might be an overestimate but Napoleon really doesnt like to eat his dry food. since he was 8 weeks (he is now almost 6 months) we have had him on Cesars wet food mixed with Eukanuba dry puppy food. HE LOVED THAT AND LICKED THE BOWL CLEAN EVERYTIME! but after I read about how horrible Cesars food is, I started giving him dry food only (Nutro food) and he hardly eats it. I always either feed it to him from the palm of my hand and thats the only way he will eat it all (if I keep scooping it up and feeding it to him) or if I stand over him with a treat and he knows he will get a tiny piece of the treat if he eats some food so he goes for the bowl, eats a couple of the crunchies and comes to me for a piece of the treat. he usually eats half of the bowl this way. but he never eats the same way as he did when we fed him cesars and the eukabuba. I dont know what to do. An y advice is really appreciated! thanks, xoxoRita |
i say feed him what he will eat the most important thing is that he eats. mabey try cottage cheese in his dry food or yogert i hope you find something good luck! |
Sounds like you're doing the right thing in handfeeding him. Sometimes for picky eaters I just throw a bunch of dry kibbles on the living room floor and they eat it better that way than out of the bowl. I wouldn't do the treats you are just exchanging one bad habit for another. It's hard switching to dry when you've been giving can, but it does happen. If you don't mind the inconvenience of giving can and you brush his teeth, just buy a better quality can food with no meat by-products, no corn, and very little grains, if any. I have three and one just gave birth so she was getting canned so everybody was getting canned and they very quickly all stopped eating their dry food so I am going through the same thing, but I usually have to do it every time my Mom comes to visit with her malteses because she "spoils" mine, right along with hers so I know it doesn't take that long to return to good habits. Since yours has never eaten dry exclusively you might try adding a small amount of chicken broth (organic kind with low sodium) over the dry. |
Why not mix it with a better quality of can? Mix very little with the dry just enought to coat the kibble. Works with my little one when she won't eat her kibble. |
I know how you feel. I used to have to hand feed Hobbs bc he was SO picky and would NEVER eat! We tried about 6 or 7 different foods until we finally found one that he LOVED! We feed Chicken Soup and I no longer have to hand feed Hobbs! It's amazing! If I were you, I would try to get some samples of different kinds of foods, like Chicken Soup, Merricks, ect., put them all out, and see which one your little guy likes best. That is what we did and Hobbs chose Chicken Soup. Also, mixing the dry food with Cottage Cheese or plain yogurt might also help. Good luck! |
thanks for all the posts guys!! I will try all of your suggestions..thanks again--rita |
Bentley is a picky eater too and actually prefers cat food over any dog food I've ever bought. Today at PetsMart they had a sample bag of Chicken Soup for $2.99 for a pound and a half bag. So I bought it and crossed my fingers. I've been wanting to put him on a healther dog food. He LOVES Chicken Soup!!! For a couple of bucks you should try it. I was amazed at how healthy it is when I read the ingredients. Too bad they don't make a bowl of people food this healthy!! |
Oh my gosh, I have finally found others like me - I too have to hand feed my 13 year old Yorkie and now the 6 year old expects it too. Family and friends who see me doing this think I am 100% crazy but I dont care. I have been feedling them the Cesars, need to find something better, can anyone give me idea where to buy the Chicken Soup or Merricks or do I order on line? |
I would be careful with cat food, there are certain cat foods the expand upon eating and therefore will bloat the puppies tummy! Not all of the cat food is like this but there are some. |

Blue Buffalo also makes an EXCELLENT food, both canned and hard. The good thing about Blue Buffalo is that PetSmart sells it. |
