How old for Rabies Shot? Hello All- This is my first post and I need some suggestions. I have a yorkie (my first yorkie) who will be a year old on the 11th of August :cheer:. I've had him since he was 2 & 1/2 months old. I bought him from a puppy shop in November (which I knew I shouldn't have), but I fell in Love with them and this was the only option available with my budget. Before I decided to buy a Yorkie I did about three months of reaserch and I found this website; which I absolutely LOVE . When I got Gizmo they said he had all his shots including Rabies shot. I took him to the vet that same weekend and I found out he had an ear infection which is all better now. I recently took him to Petsmart for a trim and they said that the Rabies shot record was not real, but his vet didn't tell me other wise. The groomer said they have to be six months old in order to get his Rabies shot and when I got him he was only 2 & 1/2 months. He has all his other shots and I am confused on what to do about this situation. Do I take him to get another  ? Was the vet supposed to catch on to this? He has been to the Vet twice. First time for his puppy shots and that’s when we found out about his ear infection. The second was for a follow-up. How old do they have to be for there Rabies shot? Thanks for reading |
I believe they have to be at least 4 months for the Rabies shot. |
Hootie was 12 weeks old when she got hers. Is that bad? |
Chachi and Jewels were 4 months when they got theirs |
Hi as you got him from a pet shop, it is uncertain what he actually did or didn't have unless they gave you a record with him of the vaccination. Rabies falls under a different category for both giving the vaccination and record keeping of the vaccinations given. The rabies vaccination is a Federal Govt regulated vaccination where the Vet doing the vaccination has to keep a record of the animals they are vaccinating that the info can be provided to the Fed Govt should they request it. Without the vaccination record and rabies shot tag and number there is no record so I sincerely doubt he was vaccinated for rabies as that info is required by law once the rabies vaccine is given. As you got him at 2 1/2 months of age, and are not that certain what they did, I think it would be safer to wait until he is 14 1/2 months old before doing a rabies vaccination. You don't want to overload him or do vaccinations too early since the last one if they did indeed do one. I never recommend rabies vaccinations for Yorkie pups at less than 6 months of age. They should not ever be given with any other vaccinations and never at the time they are sedated for a surgery of some sort. If rabies has already been done at a young age and they are okay, then it should be fine. |
Thanks all for the quick reply! I guess Gizmo is going to have to wait a while longer to get his trim but he still is a Sexy baby..Hehe thanks again |
they give them at 12 weeks here |
I think it all depends on location as to when they get their rabies shot. Here they have to be 3 months or older. |
Grooming It might be possible that your pup has had its rabies shot. Some of the vets are real quick to give the rabies vaccination. You would think the government is pressuring them in some way. You might try a smaller independent groomer if you really want that grooming. Some of the smaller places only schedule one grooming at a time so he would not be exposed to other animals. . Of course, if he's aggressive, he really needs that shot first to protect the groomer. Good luck. |
I was told Piper got her rabies before she was shipped at 13 weeks. My Vet said it was to young to keep affective. Normally they don't do this before 16 weeks. So now I have to have them repeated. |
Here in California they have to get their rabbi shot by four months and also licensed at the same time. If one don't get a license at four months of age then they are fined. The vet wouldn't give Baby Blessing her rabbi shot at four months so I got stuck with a fine, that's ok cause I definately go according to what our vet recommended. Pets Mart won't groom a dog unless you show its rabbi shot proof here in our area. |
Cooper was 6 months... I waited until Cooper weighed at least 7 lbs...I was told that the rabies shot can make them ill. He was so tiny I didn't want to do it. So he was just under 6 months old when he got his....and no problems. |
one vet said 5m the other said 3 i would do the 5 jmo |

Here they want to give them rabies shots asap. They really push it. FOr an indoor dog no less. It must be liability thing. I called a vet today and they want to load up my 3 month old with rabies and the rest of her 3rd shots and tag on a nice hefty office visit. My dog already went to a vet 10 days ago, need no examination again, just the dang shots. I missed her appt at the base vet due to weather conditions. If I could give her shots, I would (Ive tried in the past). 12 weeks seems mighty young for rabies shot. As for groomers, I can only say I had my deceased male done by one and easily could to the same job for free. My .01. |
Give the Rabies shot @ 4 months or 16 weeks of age. If you have any other questions let me know, Im a vet tech. |
The heartaches of buying a dog in a Pet shop. First, shame on you!! Next, before you go getting this puppy anymore shots, have your Vet. do a titer test to see if he needs any. |
Mine got his at 20 weeks. My vet recommeds 5-6 months of age |
I don't know about anyone esle but this is offensive. Quote:
I mean. come on. She/He knows they did wrong now. don't rub it in. I'm sure you've made mistakes. Sometimes, forewarned is nice. but Heaven help us. it doesn't always, happen. TyTy PS. When I moved from Maryland to CA. my 8 week old Shih Tzu in the 90's was required by Delta to be on board with me. So yes. Toto had her rabies then. either that or I refused to go. or find her a new home. not happening. |
Well, today I took my 3 month old to the VEt to get her third shots. I got headfaked and they gave her the rabies on top of the other shots. So far, she is just sore, no sickness I see tonight. She was vaccinated by breeder at 6 weeks and had her 2nd and 3rd shots at 9 weeks and 12 weeks. Some say the 6 week shots do not count (cancelled by mother's immunity). Other Vets say she has had all her puppy shots, see you in another year. Most breeders here give the puppy their first shots, hence the advertisement of Yorkie with shots. Does anyone know which is correct? Is my Ginger done and to just receive a booster in a year? That will probably be her last shots then (unless I have to get her rabies for one reason or other). I am just wondering whether or not to give her another round in 16 weeks to be safe. Thanks Candini |
My vet says puppy shots at 6, 9 and 12 weeks and the rabies at 16 weeks. |
