To Spay Or Not To Spay That Is The Question Hi All :wavey: If a person never intends for their female yorkie to have babies...should you have them spayed? Thanks for your help. |
I think itis wise to have them spayed. You avoid your dog going into heat andalso there are health benefits to it |
definately get your females spayed if she is not going to be used for breeding. Like already mentioned, it prevents them going into heat and it prevents many health issues, mammory cancer being the top most concern. Get your girl spayed at 6 months |
I vote Spay. You never know what could happen even if you are highly precautious. Mistakes can happen. Plus there are added benefits to having it done as well. |
I do not plan on breeding Lola, I'm DEFINATELY for spaying! Lola will be six months at the end of this month & you better believe she's gonna be up at the vet getting taken care of. I just think it is much safer & easier if se gets spayed. no accidental pregnancy, no going into heat, and preventing health issues for my baby girl. |
yes please spay.... |
is there a chance with weight gain from spaying?? |
I just got Gracie spayed. She is almost 7 months. It has alot of health benefits and I didn't want to mess with the whole "heat" thing, Gross! |
Please spay. |
definitely do it. You will be glad you did |
I vote for spay. :) |
I Vote Spay! Two thumbs up for spaying! It's healthy for them and easier on you and leaves no wiggle room for accidental litters or furniture staining! I would spay her before her first heat though since there is now proof that doing so prevents the chance of breast cancer and the earlier you have her spayed the easier it will be on her since pups recover faster than adults. :D Call around and ask numerous vets about their opinions on spaying and neutering and ask why they believe what they believe. Some 'old science' vets still say that letting a dog/cat complete a heat cycle is the right way to go about it but 'new science' vets have proven that is wrong and that there are definately better alternatives. |
Yes, I vote for spaying as well! Maci will be spayed at 6mos mainly because we want to, but also because we have to. The breeder whom we got Maci from had us sign a contract not to breed the puppy. I think any reputable breeder would ask this of their customers. Plus, like everyone has already said...getting your furbaby spayed will eliminate having to deal with the whole "heat" thing  and many health issues! |
here is another reason to spay. This actually happened to our Phoebe. We had no intentions of ever breeding her. She was small not as small as some, but still small 3lbs 9ozs on a very full tummy. We had been told that do to some earlier health problems that she had had, we should not spay her because she may not make it. However not spaying her also ended her life. BTW I have also been told there is a much safer anethesia now & also request blood work prior to the surgery and make sure they have the results back before they do the surgery incase there maybe a problem. Oh, yea and wait until they are at least 2lbs. Link to why spay Originally Posted by Lacy's Mom Sorry, it's pyometra not pyrometra. All my puppies are neutered or spayed at 6 months old and no ones became overweighted . Gaining weight is mostly due to malnutrition and lack of exercise . |

I also vote for spay.:) |
All of my dogs have been spayed at 6 months of age. I've never had any problems with them gaining weight. I vote for spay. |
Definitely spay! This way, the dogs will avoid greater risks of health problems, and you will never have to worry about unwanted babies. Do it out of principle - there are SO many babies in shelters, way more animals than there is space. And often, it's caused by accidental breeding. It's very sad - those poor animals. |
Another vote for yes.. please spay. Not only is it the right thing to do (how many unwanted pets are in shelters in the US??? Dont know the number but it is astounding. My sister has a mini Snahauzer 7.5 years old and never spayed her due to my sister always putting it off "we can't afford it right now" etc etc. (She never got pregnant) Well, she got pyometra 2 months ago and if my sisters' daughter would not have noticed she was in pain and they took her to the vet and vet showed them pictures of her uterus so infected and enlarged that vet said right there,,emergency spay now or put her down. This ended up costing them over 1,000 dollars as appossed to the 200.00 or so it would have cost back when she should have had it done! (I kept harping on the sister of mine to have her spayed, health risks, etc etc but to know avail.) Anyway, Penny-Girl (the mini-schna) looked so pitiful for days after that surgery, but she came through and she is back to her old chubby self now, and I am so happy she made it through. My AprilLove is due to be spayed on the 25th, yes I am scared (she is so small) but she will have the pre blood work screening and isoflourane for anesthesia. |
Coco is getting spayed on Friday. I have been nervous about her having surgery especially because she is only 5 lbs but I know that her getting spayed is what is best for her. My husband read an article today that said that after getting spayed Yorkies have been shown to gain weight, have change in the hair texture (it gets curly and kinky) and they have personality changes after they are fixed. I love my little girl just the way she is and I would hate if she was a different puppy after but I just want to do what is best for her. Has anyone else ever experienced this or heard of drastic changes in the dogs afterwards?? |

there are always rumors that spaying/neutering your pets "change" them but in my experience with over 11 dogs I've had in my life.. no issues, no changes. they still stay the same size, same hair and same personality :) Oh yea, and at the shelter I work at every animal is spayed/neutered as soon as they enter our facility and no changes there either. :) |
Thanks that makes me feel better. Due to all the rumors about what happens to them after, we have ths image of us bringing one dog and taking home another. I know she will be fine. Thanks for the reassurance! Wish her luck! I have to bring her to the vet in the next hour. |

Although I am a VERY nervous Mommy right now since one of my little (only 3.8 lbs) furbabies is getting her procedure TODAY, I vote for spay/neuter! Especially since you're not planning on breeding. I have read way too many posts and puppies for sale articles from accidental and unplanned breedings. Good luck and keep us posted! |
If you're not breeding, then spay. There will be some weight gain but that's better than accidental males coming into your yard and accidental matings. You'll have less mess to take care of (every 6 months or so) and the bitc*iness that comes with their cycles. |
Coco is recovering from getting spayed today. Poor little thing is so lethargic but she is doing well. I know that it was the right thing to do and now that it is over I am much more relaxed. It is so scary leaving my little baby there for surgery. Knowing her she will be running around the place before we know it but for now she is just trying to figure out how to move around with the cone on her head! |
