stay don't jump! Schatzie seems to have no fear of heights. If Im holding her on my lap sitting in a high stool for example she will want to jump right off. We have a deck extreamly high and on her leash she seems to want to jump off the deck too. Do Yorkies grow up and learn to respect heights? Even in her doggie bed she will roll out of it while she is asleep. (luckily it's only inches that she falls out on and will never hurt herself) I would love to have her sleep in our bed when she's a year old but if she never learns to respect heights I am so afraid of her falling off the bed. I am even afraid to teach her to use the outside deck stairs to go up and down as her clumbsiness will allow her to fall right off. (concrete below) Im hoping this is just a puppy stage now and her agility will improve with age. I know Yorkies are known to fear nothing but she scares me to death with her care-free attitude, she thinks she can fly !! :p |
Yikes! My Yoda has jumped off the bed before on purpose. It's pretty high, maybe 3 and a half feet? Also, last month when UPS man came, he jumped off the bathroom counter and went SPLAT! on his belly 3.5 feet below onto a hard surface. Perhaps use some mesh fencing for your deck? At least for a little while until schatzie learns? You could also put her on a high surface and watch her closely and see if she realizes it's dangerous or not. Of course pad everything down below just in case. I really don't want Yoda jumping off of anything high, as he already has a bum leg that goes out once in a while, and it won't be helped any if he keeps putting so much pressure on it. You can also buy or make some steps and teach Schatzie how to use them. |

Heh, no... :( We got all the materials though, and then we saw the Target steps, but then the Target steps all got sold out! DOH! Yoda wants to be like Otis!!! :P |
We have a split level home deck is really high, I used 18 inch tall "stiff" (there are 2 kinds i used the stiff) chicken wire. Cant hardly see it. It kinda blends in and it works great, has been up for 3 years and still looks good and hasnt wornsed it on my deck and in the cracks of each step. the price depends on where you are at it cost me 49.00 for the whole thing and I still have extra wire Deck + 16 steps and rail sides down the deck. We have puppies about every other year and in the summer they "LOVE" thier field trips outside. (plus I always have to keep a puppy! LOL). you can see pics. of my deck in the background in my album. We have noticed that Toto at least "looks before she leaps"! If she doesn't readily see a way down ... she just leaps like she is flying! :) Fortunately she hasn't hurt herself! I always keep a finger around one little leg when I hold her in my arms and I keep sofa pillows around any place where she is likely to climb. We keep a little wicker stool at the foot of our bed where she can easily get up and down! Doesn't do a lot for our decor but neither does the bzillion toys she has strewn all over the house! And after being a "germ freak", "everything has to be in it's place neat freak" for my entire life ... guess what? I don't care!!! :p It's amazing what a Yorkie can do for you!! ;) |
I've got a great solution for now, as for as the sleeping in the bed with you is concerned. We wanted Roxee to sleep in the bed with us and we started putting here in bed as soon as we got her home and one morning we realized that she had been very very close to the edge of the bed doing her business and it scared us to death so rather than put her down somewhere to sleep we just went and bought one of those little mesh carriers for little dogs and we put it right between us in bed and when we went to bed we put her right in there and she sleeps great in there and i love having her there with us at night. she's only 4 months old now so we she gets alittle bigger we're going to do away with the carrier and let her start sleeping with us out of it. But for now she's like your little one she's not afraid of anything so i dont trust her to not jump off the bed and our bed is a very very tall bed so i'm sure it would hurt her if she did. So if u like the idea of having her in the bed with you but dont wont to wait until she's a year old you might think about this idea it works great for us she loves it and we love having her in bed with us at night. |
